WALLMOUNTABLES 2015

July 10 – August 30, 2015

Exhibition opening reception:

Friday, July 10, at 7 to 9 pm

1460 WALLMOUNTABLES 2015!

Installation: July 8 th 3-8 pm, July 9 th 3-8 pm, and July 10 th 3-6 pm

Deinstallation: August  29-30, 2-7 pm

The District of Columbia Arts Center (DCAC) announces the return of 1460 Wallmountables , DCAC’s annual open exhibition. On Wednesday, July 8, DCAC will open its doors at 3 pm, beginning a three-day installation process during which artists can purchase up to five 2' x 2' spaces to hang their work.

Spaces sell on a first-come, first-served basis for $15 per square, with DCAC members receiving one free space and brand new members receiving four spaces for their membership fee of $30. Work is accepted from a wide range of media created by artists at various stages in their careers. There is no curating; if it fits, it shows. To sweeten the deal, a $100 “Best Use of Space” prize is presented during the opening reception to the artist who makes the most innovative use of their 2’ x 2’ squares. Since the first Wallmountables in 1990, the exhibition has become a celebrated summer tradition at DCAC as one of the center’s most important fundraising events.

DCAC is a 25-year-old nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting budding artists in the Washington, D.C. area. Our 750 square foot gallery and 50 seat theatre provides a professional venue for both visual and theatre artists. We also provide a structured program through which artists in all media can practice both the craft and the business of art. Today, DCAC is one of the only grassroots organizations available to artists looking to break into the mainstream. Just as artists have come to depend on our support, so too has the community come to associate DCAC with outstanding and original artistic expression.

FREE Non-profit fundraising training on July 23rd

Fundraising Training & Discussion for Local Nonprofits:

How to Win Funding from Local Businesses
Do you work at an Adams Morgan nonprofit that is looking for more funding?  Or, are you a business owner looking to support local nonprofits?
If so, the Historic Dupont Circle Main Streets, the Adams Morgan Parntership BID, TD Bank, and Elevate (a local grant writing firm) invite you to an interactive July training and discussion.  Not only will you get a delicious free lunch provided by two local businesses -- Amsterdam Falafel and Pleasant Pops -- but you will have the opportunity to:
  • Learn about local businesses like TD Bank that are supporting local nonprofits;
  • Meet and mingle with business and nonprofit leaders and discuss the role of local giving;
  • Learn about training opportunities for your nonprofit staff to raise more money locally; and
  • Ask experts in foundation and corporate fundraising about best practices in building a grants program.
Thursday July 23rd from 12 noon to 1 pm at Elevated Effect above Smash Records on 18th Street, at 2314 18th Street on the second and fourth floors. www.elevatedeffect.com .

Atlas Corps introduction

We recently had the pleasure to meet with Scott Beale and his staff of Atlas Corps at the Look Out at 2439 18th Street, NW. We think the Adams Morgan community should know about them as well (if you don't already).

Here is a quick overview:

AtlasCorps connects leading social change organizations in the US with experienced professionals from around the world for a yearlong capacity-building fellowship.  Fellows are leaders in their home countries with 2 to 10 years of experience in a diverse range of professional roles; all speak fluent English; and over 2/3 hold post-graduate degrees. Leading organizations like Miriam's Kitchen, Kids' Food Basket, CARE, Points of Light and over 100 others host Atlas Corps Fellows to add unique linguistic and regional expertise and diverse perspectives and professional skills to their teams.

Atlas Corps coordinates all logistics including recruitment and vetting, visas, flights, insurance, stipend disbursement and professional development for the Fellows.

Host Organizations provide a meaningful opportunity for the Fellow to advance the organization's mission and contribute a cost share - typically $35,000. We are matching Fellows with Host Organizations for our September class now. The selection deadline is late July.  Host Organizations interview their top candidates by skype/google+hangout/phone and are encouraged to request any additional information necessary (e.g., writing samples, portfolios, etc.) to select the best candidates. To learn more about hosting a Fellow, visit our website at www.atlascorps.org or check out this recent article featured in the Nonprofit Quarterly .

To give you some insight into the impact a Fellow can have on a Host Organization, here is an example of recent feedback from the supervisor of an Atlas Corps Fellow:

"Hosting Arturo as our Atlas Corps Fellow has been an organization-changing experience. From dreaming up projects and then executing with precision and excellence, to staff-wide culture changes with special emphasis on equity and inclusion work, he has improved our ability to complete our mission, allowing young people to live and learn well. He has improved the core of who we are and we know that his positive impact on Kids' Food Basket will live on beyond his 1.5 years with us." - Christine Lentine, Kids' Food Basket

Still looking for Summer Help? H Street Main Street could help

Business Owners & Managers,

H Street Main Street would like to invite you to participate in a Main Streets Driven Summer Entrepreneurial Youth Employment Program (SYEP) for 2015.

This program is a six-week long program sponsored by H Street Main Street in and partnership with other Main Street Programs in DC and the Department of Employment Services (DOES) that provides District youth ages 14 to 21 & 22 - 24 with enriching and constructive summer work experiences through subsidized placements in the private sectors.

That means your business can participate.

Young people age 14 -15 can work 20 hours per week and youth age 16-24 can work 25 to 30 hours per week. Youth can work anytime between 9 am -9 pm as long as they do not exceed the daily and weekly maximum set by DDOE. There is no cost to you to employ the Youth. DC Department of Employment Services (DOES) will pay the salaries of the Youth.   Before the Youth begin their employment, they will complete a training program conducted by Next Level Experience.

DOES have hired a program manager to oversee the administrative aspects of this program so you can focus on your business. You will have them part-time for 5 weeks. We will provide the participants with training in the following areas before they reach you in Customer Service, Job Readiness, Financial Literacy and Entrepreneurship.

This is a chance for our Businesses to give back. We're not asking for money, but your time and expertise. In return, you’ll receive additional help from enthusiastic youth as well as contributing to community and talent building.  This is truly a great way to give back to our Youth and local communities by providing hand on exposure and to continue making a positive and lasting impression.

Please signify your commitment to participate by registering through the following link: 2015 Summer Youth Employment Program Registration We would like to get a quick feedback as time is of the essence.  We look forward to working with you through the summer!
