Adams Morgan Farmers Market for Saturday November 22

Neighborhood News

1) AMPBID offices will be closed November 24-28, 2014

The AMPBID offices will be closed the week of November 24th. For items related to Small Business Saturday, please contact Nathan Ackerman at 202-669-2323. Happy Thanksgiving!

2) Remember: Small Business Saturday - November 29th

Small Business Saturday (SBS) made an impact in Adams Morgan a few years back when Adams Morgan Main Street won a competition for an American Express sponsored ad campaign which featured some of our businesses.

This year SBS falls on Novem ber 29th, between Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

The AMPBID has signed on as a Neighborhood Champion and have already received boxes of promotional materials aimed at connecting local businesses to this national effort to Shop Small. Tote bags, welcome mats, signage, etc. are available to participating businesses, for example, but the website has ways to brand your online presence too. The most important of these is adding your business to an online map that shows shoppers who want to support local businesses that your business is part of the campaign . There is also a way to access and integrate SBS branding into your digital presence.

This link can get you started:

https://www.americanexpress.com/us/shopsmall

The success of SBS relies on a group of businesses in a community coordinating their activities so that the neighborhood becomes a destination for shoppers on Small Business Saturday.

In the same vein as the British motivational poster  before WWII, "Keep Calm and Carry On", our theme will be Keep Calm and Shop Small.

Nathan Ackerman will be our SBS point person and he can be reached at 202-669-2323 or by email at nathan@18thStreetMedia.com

We sent out a press release on Wednesday this week with a list of participating businesses.

Also the Washington Business Journal had an article about the renowned artist Aniekan Udofia www.aniekanudofia.com who has been braving the cold this week to create a special mural in celebration of local independent businesses on the wall at 2423 18th Street, NW. To celebrate the fifth year of Small Business Saturday, American Express commissioned Aniekan and artists in 12 cities across the country to create public Shop Small murals.

The Small Business Majority is hosting an upcoming call with Maria Contreras-Sweet, administrator of the Small Business Administration , to discuss the importance of Small Business Saturday.
This year's Small Business Saturday on November 29th will feature millions of consumers nationwide shopping at and supporting local small businesses. Specifically, the SBA is helping spearhead for the first time an effort to extend the hours around Small Business Saturday, launching a new initiative for Small Business Saturday Night, encouraging consumers to visit local small business restaurants and watering holes. We're not only encouraging people to shop small this year, but to dine small as well.
Please join us on Monday November 24 at 4pm EST as we delve more into the SBA's efforts around promoting this year's Small Business Saturday and Saturday Night, and making it the most successful one yet.

3) AMPBID partners with YOPP to help businesses reach customers

What is YOPP?
YOPP is a mobile shopping social network that supports small business by helping shoppers find exactly what they’re looking for in their local community with help from other shoppers and local businesses. Instead of wasting time and energy on search engines shoppers can ask the shopping social network including local businesses to help them find what they’re looking for.  For example, s hoppers can post something they're looking for on YOPP such as a pair of red heels or a place that serves local craft beer and other YOPP users can message them where to find it.  Local small businesses that sell red heels or local craft beer will also be notified through YOPP that a shopper is looking for something they sell and can reach out to the shopper directly. Shoppers can also get invited to exclusive sales, events and promotions by small business and share cool stuff they find in the community on YOPP.
What does YOPP stand for?
The name YOPP comes from Dr. Seuss’ book Horton Hears A Who.  The book is about a small world called Whoville that no can see or hear except for Horton the elephant.  In the end of the book when the world is threatened by the other animals in the jungle the Mayor of Whoville asks everyone to come to the town square to yell “We are hear!” but still no one hears them.  It isn’t until the smallest Who, Jojo, yells out YOPP do the other animals finally recognize that Whoville and the Who’s exist.  So, in the context of the mobile app YOPP the idea is that it doesn’t matter how small you are if we all yell out YOPP than we’ll be seen and heard.
Why Adams Morgan businesses should try YOPP
By 2018 the majority of all shopping will take place on or through a mobile device, leaving brick-and-mortar stores struggling to compete and stay relevant.  YOPP is a gateway for small, local businesses to the world of mobile shopping.  It also enables small businesses within communities to cross-promote each other all year round exposing their own loyal shoppers as they promote their involvement with YOPP to other small businesses in the community.
The Adams Morgan Partnership BID is working with YOPP to draw attention to the small businesses in Adams Morgan by publicizing the early adopters of YOPP; a new mobile shopping social network.   The app is free to use and it only takes 5 minutes to download and post and invitation.
If you have any questions about how to use YOPP or you would like assistance downloading and posting an invite for Small Business Saturday given your busy schedules the YOPP team would be happy to stop by and assist you.  You can email the founder directly at shana@yoppapp.com

4) Bullfrog Bagels Takeover at Tryst for one day on November 22

Tryst Coffeehouse in Adams Morgan Hosts an Adams Morgan
Bullfrog Bagel Takeover for One Day Only This Saturday!

Tryst Coffeehouse, Bar & Lounge, located in the heart of Adams Morgan at 2459 18th Street, NW, is proud to announce a Bullfrog Bagels takeover this Saturday, November 22nd, where they will be offering a limited amount of DC’s much buzzed about Bullfrog Bagels for purchase from 6:30 a.m. until supplies last.

Tryst always sells assorted bagels throughout the day topped with delicious spreads or with the incredibly popular Smoked Salmon Plate that features smoked salmon, red onion, tomato, capers and cream cheese with a bagel of choice. However, this weekend all of their bagels will be replaced by local, hand-rolled, boiled and baked artisan bagels from Bullfrog Bagels in DC’s Atlas District.

Bullfrog Bagels, located at 1341 H Street, NE, opened its doors just two months ago, after a series of successful pop-ups around the city this past summer. Establishing themselves as city favorites from day one, an opinion solidified by the Washington Post Express naming them their favorite DC bagel this September, they’ve been challenged to keep their freshly baked bagels on the shelves. While many fans liken Bullfrog’s bagels to classic NYC-style (of which DC’s infamously had something of a dearth), the man behind the secret signature recipe, Bullfrog Founder and Baker, Jeremiah Cohen, takes tremendous Stars and Bars pride in the fact that like himself, Bullfrog Bagels are born and bred Washingtonians made with DC water and raised with local wild yeast.

Tryst will be offering assorted Bullfrog Bagels for purchase in store as well as individually or by the baker’s dozen to bring home. Given Bullfrog’s wrap-around-the-block-for-bagels track record, we recommend customers get to Tryst early this Saturday before supplies run out!

5) Envision Adams Morgan Project Survey

Just a quick reminder to take the Envision Adams Morgan survey which will be wrapping up very soon. Click here to take the 5 minute survey:

www.envisionadamsmorgan.org

Background on the Envision Project:

One of the primary missions of the District’s Office of Planning (OP) is to work with communities to create and maintain thriving and distinctive neighborhoods. In the coming weeks, OP will be initiating a planning process for Adams Morgan to deliver a Vision Framework document for the neighborhood. The goal of the project is to provide public and private stakeholders with a tool that identifies opportunity areas for the community to preserve its physical characteristics, enhance amenities, support sustainability, and improve quality of life for the community. OP and their consultant team will work with agencies, residents, property owners and businesses to realize the collective goals of the community and develop an aspirational but actionable “Vision” for the neighborhood.

A major catalyst for undertaking the Adams Morgan Vision Framework was the strong interest the community expressed to OP about creating collective planning guidance for the neighborhood. The effort will build upon previous work to complete planning analysis and develop recommendations.

Significant work has been completed by the community through the “Envision Adams Morgan”, a study that came about in response to the rapid changes associated with proposed commercial and residential development projects in the neighborhood.  Another example is OP’s recent application of the Vibrant Retail Streets Toolkit, which helped the identify retail market opportunities as well as a path forward. The survey is one of the tools that will be used as the process moves forward.

6) Miracle on 18th Street, NW at the Black Squirrel and Libertine today

One of the annual miracles performed by the Great Lakes Brewing Company in Cleveland, Ohio, is the changing of water into Christmas Ale, a highly sought refreshment that will fill the tap lines of The Black Squirrel and Libertine restaurants TODAY Friday (Nov. 21) starting at 4 p.m.

This is the initial release of the coveted brew in the Washington, D.C., region, a significance not lost on those who find patience to be an overrated virtue.

The festivities include all of sorts of opportunities, starting with a potential photo-op. That means you with the iPhone permanently affixed to one of your hands and the Great Lakes toboggan that will be parked in front of the Black Squirrel. Think. You. Toboggan. Toboggan. Yo u. Have a friend snap away.

Plenty of complimentary Christmas cookies will be on hand, along with Great Lakes glassware and lots of other Great Lakes goodies.

Libertine, the sister restaurant of The Black Squirrel, also will be serving Christmas Ale, only with a twist, a sugar rim for those who crave an additional kick. Raymond Jones III, Libertine's manager, will devise a number of specialty libations that feature Christmas Ale, including a drink employing fresh ginger and orange and cinnamon sticks.

The bigwigs of Great Lakes cannot walk on water or heal the sick, but every year, their brewers do change water into Christmas Ale, a miracle unto itself, the miracle on 18th Street this season.

Miracle on 18th Street: Great Lakes Christmas Ale Launch Party
Friday, November 21st, starting at 4:00 p.m.

But, we still have ple nty of goodies --- bunches of SPINACH, KA LE and other GREENS.  Plus loca l fresh cut BROCCOLI, BOK CHOY, RAP È, CAULIFLOWER, CARROTS, BEETS, TURNIPS and even some lo cal TOMATOES!!

We also have plent y of BRUSSELS SPROUTS and three varieties of WINTER SQUASH.  And, we'll have more of the f resh, addictive ROASTED PEANUTS.

Try to come as early as possible as we sell out of a lot on th e early side.

Don't forget to bring bags, pt and qt containers.

Ha ve a meaningful Thanksgiving and we'll see Nov 29th!

L as tly, our amazing farm staff is leaving - Kyla, Emma, Katrina and Noelle.  Our season has been enormously fruitful because of the love and care they put into nurturing the farm.  They are each going off to amazing adventures and we wish them well.

Charmaine!  what can we say about our rock.  Charmaine has been with us for 10 years as our farm manager.  She started because she needed to get away from the 9-5 grind and has found a place that not only nurtures her soul but she has created an environment on the farm that is not just efficient, but loving, caring, and inspiring.  She's going off to have her own adventures until the farm season begins again.  We could not be who we are without her.

Lindsay volunteers every week she can for several years now and she bring such light to the market, we feel blessed she wants to work with us.  Lindsay started picking up produce as part of the AVODAH program in which post college grads work in social service organizations around the DC area.  They live two group homes and we provide produce for the houses.  And she has continued all these years.  When the lines get long, she adds that needed extra cashier, so we have a lot to thank her for.

Justin, who lives full time on the farm will be coming down to the market now that the staff leaves after this week.  Justin has been with us for 5 years and we could not do without him.  He takes such care of his plants (we suspect he might even name each one!), and with Charmaine make an amazing team.  For those of you who have come to our Farm visit day, you understand how amazing Justin and Charmaine care for the farm.  We are truly blessed to have had the wonderful staff we did, and to have the consistency and care Charmaine and Justin put into the farm.  You, our customers, reap the benefit of their loving care of the food you eat.

if anyone wants some Saturday morning exercise in exchange for food, and can show up at the market at 6:45am, let us know and we'll schedule you in.

Michael, Charmaine, Justin, Kyla, Emma, Katrina, Noelle and Lindsay.
