When encountering someone experiencing a mental health crisis the first call should be the DC Dept of Behavioral Health (DBH) community response team -- available 24/7 -- at 203-673-6495 (unless the person is committing a crime, then call 911 first) .

When you call please provide a clear and concise description of the person, the event and the location and which direction they were traveling. The Community Response Team will do the following:

New Resource: Guide to Small Business Financing

CNHED created the Guide to Small Business Financing to help small business owners in Washington, DC navigate the various local lenders (i.e., financial institutions including banks, CDFIs, MFIs) and loan products to find the best financing option for their business. There is a wealth of information on lenders and loan products available to support small businesses, and this guide aims to consolidate that information and provide key tips on how small businesses owners can research, compare, and apply for these financial resources. While this guide is useful for any small business, it is specifically designed for first-time borrowers embarking on their search for debt financing.

As CNHED continues to respond to practitioner feedback and on-the-ground experience, we’re committed to developing ecosystem-wide resources and solutions to support small and minority-owned businesses at every stage. Whether through the DCSmallBizHelp tool, the CNHED Capacity Building Institute, the RFP Response Strategy Toolkit, or this guide, our intention remains: to support local businesses in their pursuit of prosperity for themselves, their employees and our broader community.

LEDC Receives Two Awards Totalling $1 Million to Support Underserved Entrepreneurs

The Latino Economic Development Center’s (LEDC) Small Business program is set to receive a combined $1 million in grants to support underserved entrepreneurs.

LEDC was awarded a $200k grant from the Small Business Administration through the agency’s Program for Investment in Micro-Entrepreneurs (PRIME). This award will be allocated to provide small business technical assistance to underserved entrepreneurs in the community. The organization also won an $800k grant from the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Office of Community Services (OCS), Community and Economic Development (CED) program to finance small businesses in DC positioned to create accessible jobs for low-income families.

LEDC is a Certified Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) that provides alternative microloan options to start-ups and existing businesses that have difficulty obtaining credit from mainstream financial institutions. Since 1991, the organization has been equipping Latinos and other underserved communities with the skills and financial tools to create a better future for their families and communities.

Disadvantage entrepreneurs will receive blended TA, training, and access to capital designed to strengthen business models, preserve or create jobs, increase financial standing and capability, and support COVID economic recovery. LEDC will support individuals from BIPOC who operate businesses along the Purple Line Light Rail and are experiencing severe operational disruption and prolonged loss of revenue.

LEDC Interim Executive Director and CEO Marjorie Nemes-Galarza, is excited about the prospect that the $1 million grants will offer. She said: "We are extremely grateful for these awards as they will greatly impact our mission to drive the economic and social advancement of low to moderate income Latinos and other underserved communities struggling to adapt during this difficult time."

Updates from RAMW

From Kathy Hollinger, President, RAMW

Yesterday Mayor Bowser announced that the DC indoor mask mandate will be lifted effective this Monday, November 22.  As always, if a restaurant or other private business wants to continue to require masks in their establishment they can do so and should post visible signage to indicate that is the requirement .

The city is updating the reporting and metrics systems to help residents assess their individual risk and community risk. Mayor Bowser stated that there is not one particular metric that will trigger the mask mandate to be reinstated, and instead DOH will monitor the situation closely.

Masks will still be required, regardless of vaccination status, in the following circumstances:

  • Any private business that wants a mask requirement;
  • On public transport like buses and trains, inside train stations, in airports, and while in rideshare vehicles;
  • Inside schools, childcare facilities, and libraries;
  • Congregate facilities, such as nursing homes/assisted living facilities, shelters, dorms/residences, and correctional facilities; and
  • In DC Government facilities where there is direct interaction between employees and the public (e.g., DMV service center; DHS service center, etc.).

The SBA wants to hear from you. SBA invites you to participate in a survey to assess your satisfaction with SBA’s customer service and communication on COVID-19 related grant and loan relief programs. The results will be used to monitor and improve SBA relief effort effectiveness. The survey will take about 15 minutes to complete for each program that you obtained financial assistance.

As the official destination marketing organization for the city, Destination DC (DDC) welcomes all people with open arms and are committed to showing locals and visitors alike that the District is a place that promotes and validates diversity, equity and inclusion.

DDC has worked to evaluate its efforts surrounding diversity, equity and inclusion. In addition to industry-wide efforts, it launched an internal task force and a new content strategy called The DEI District, which debuted in May 2021. DDC is now further engaging local minority-owned and small businesses.

On Nov. 1, 2021, DDC launched the 2022 DEI Business Fellowship , a purposeful effort to reach out and support small businesses in the local community owned by people of color, LGBTQ+, women and disabled persons. This program offers complimentary marketing, mentorship, education and networking opportunities during the 2022 calendar year to help sustain and grow your businesses, specifically by reaching business and leisure travelers.
