Age-Friendly DC invites participants for neighborhood walks

The Age-Friendly Block-by-Block Walk is one way Age-Friendly DC seeks to make the District a better place to live for those who are 50 and older.

Walk participants will identify neighborhood assets and issues needing attention all through the lens of older DC residents. Why? Because what's good for older residents can be good for those with different mobility needs - wheelchair, tricycle, walker, stroller.

Volunteers of all ages are needed to participate. Teams will be organized to walk neighborhoods divided by Single Member District (SMD) areas. But participants don’t need to be a resident of a particular SMD to volunteer.

You just need to want to help.

The Age-Friendly DC Block-by-Block Walk—March 20 – April 15—will document what you and others see so decisions can be made based on real-time information about improvements to make.  The Walk will also document what is good (great!) about neighborhoods across the District of Columbia.

Examples of what Age-Friendly DC Walk organizers are looking for:

·         Unsafe sidewalks

·         Accessibility of retail outlets and social services

·         Personal and pedestrian safety

If you are interested in being a part of the inaugural Walk, Age-Friendly DC would like you to volunteer.  More information including the volunteer sign up are on the Age-Friendly DC website, http://agefriendly.dc.gov/page/get-involved .

Security Staff training available on March 10 and 11th

“Nightclub Security Consultants” will be presenting its nationally-certified Hospitality Operations Security Training (HOST) course on Monday & Tuesday, March 10th & 11th, from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

The two sessions will be held at Shadowroom at 2131 “K” Street, NW.

During the past 5 years, the “HOST Security Training Course” has been taught in the Metropolitan DC Region to over 500 in-house security guards, managers and owners.  The program has been successfully presented and reviewed by ABRA, MPD, Office of the Attorney General (OAG), DC Nightlife Association, and Restaurant Association Of Metropolitan Washington (RAMW).

Although this course was designed for owners, managers and security staff employees, all establishment employees can benefit from this training.

Training and interactive discussions will cover DC Alcohol Regulations, Best Practices for Safe Operations, Security Plans, Prevention of Incidents, Proper Handling of Incidents when they Occur, Preservation of Crime Scenes and Incident Scenes for Authorities, Legal Authority for Citizen Arrests and Detentions, Ways to Reduce Alcohol Service Liabilities, Conflict Resolution, Limits to Use of Force, Prevention of Sexual Assaults, and more.

There is an “Early Registration Discount” for anyone registering before February 28th.

In addition, employees of establishments which are members of the DC Nightlife Association can receive an additional registration discount of $10 dollars per person if they register online on our website and use discount code “DCNIGHTLIFE.”

For additional information or questions, please contact Nightclub Security Consultants via email: at admin@nightclubsecurity.com or call (619) 997-6144.

Information on DDOE's RiverSmart and Stormwater Retention Credit programs

The District Department of the Environment (DDOE) recently launched two new programs that provide financial incentives to managing stormwater on your property – RiverSmart Rewards and the Stormwater Retention Credit (SRC) Trading Program.

The SRC Trading Program is a market-based approach to managing stormwater in the District.  SRCs are generated by sites that voluntarily manage stormwater or manage above their regulatory requirement. SRCs can create revenue when they are sold to regulated construction projects that can use SRCs to meet a portion of their regulatory requirements for retaining stormwater.

Properties can also utilize RiverSmart Rewards to receive a discount of up to 55% on the DDOE Stormwater Fee, which is billed to a property’s water and sewer bill. Properties that have installed and maintain stormwater retention BMPs would qualify for a discount.

Discounts are calculated based on stormwater retention volume of the BMPs on the site. By participating in the program, properties are automatically eligible for an additional discount of up to 4% off the DC Water Clean Rivers Impervious Area Charge.

To learn more about DDOE’s stormwater management programs, visit ddoe.dc.gov . You may contact Emily Rice ( emily.rice@dc.gov or 202-535-2679) to apply for a RiverSmart Rewards discount or Evan Branosky ( evan.branosky@dc.gov or 202-535-2295) to participate in SRC trading.

Second Annual Taste of Adams Morgan - Tuesday April 29th

Taste of Adams Morgan

Interested in attracting new patrons to your business and raising money for a worthwhile cause?  Then we have the event for you!

Mary’s Center and the Adams Morgan Partnership Business Improvement District (AMPBID) would like to invite the restaurants of Adams Morgan to participate in the Second Annual Taste of Adams Morgan set for Tuesday, April 29th, from 5:30-9pm.

Last year’s event raised over $3,500 and we need YOU to make this year’s event an even greater success!

Similar to last year, Taste of Adams Morgan will provide city-goers with a chance to sample from Adams Morgan’s best restaurants while supporting their neighborhood and Mary’s Center, in the process.

Tickets will be available for purchase online as well as the day of the event with proceeds going to Mary’s Center.  Each ticket may be redeemed for one pre-fix “taste” at the participating restaurants, so with tickets in hand, attendees can stroll down 18th Street at their leisure, ready to whet their whistles and partake in some of the best dishes that Adams Morgan has to offer.

Not familiar with Mary’s Center?

Just off of 18th Street at the corner of Ontario and Kalorama (we are neighbors!), Mary’s Center’s bustling main offices have been serving the DC metro area since 1988.  Entering our 26th year, with now six locations and two mobile medical units, Mary’s Center continues to fulfill its mission of building better futures through the delivery of health care, education, and social services.  We embrace culturally diverse communities and provide them with the highest quality of care, regardless of ability to pay.  Learn more about President/CEO Maria Gomez and Mary’s Center on our website: www.maryscenter.org .

Interested in participating in Taste of Adams Morgan ?  For more details, please contact Monique Perry at mperry@maryscenter.org or call (202) 420-7113.
