Drag Queen Storytime returns Sunday!

We're partnering again this year with the
DC Public Library
and
The Line Hotel DC
to bring back
Drag Queen Storytime
! Join us monthly including
this Sunday, August 28
for a free children’s story time in Unity Park! We'll be set up in Unity Park on the last Sunday of every month from April through October at 11am. Rain location will be inside The Line Hotel DC (next to the park).
The goal of Drag Queen Storytime is to inspire a love of reading, while teaching deeper lessons on diversity, self-love and an appreciation of others. Visit

AdMo Vibe concerts conclude next Wednesday, August 31 with Emma G
|
AdMo Vibe is the ultimate setting for a family night out, date night, relaxing evening in the park, or solo adventure. The bands will be playing various genres of music including folk, pop, classical, rock, jazz, and more. Concert goers can picnic with takeout from a local restaurant, enjoy good vibes with neighbors and friends, and visit an array of shops and boutiques just steps away before or after the performances.
The final AdMo Vibe concert for this season will be on Wednesday, August 31 from 6 - 7:30pm in Kalorama Park.

18th Street Pedestrian Zone #2 set for September 4!
|
The debut of the Adams Morgan Pedestrian Zone (AMPZ) on Sunday, August 21 was great, despite the intermittent rain we endured throughout the day and into the evening. The response to the street closure was overwhelmingly positive and we're excited for even more participation at the next AMPZ on September 4.
We'll have more information about the entertainment and other programing soon, so stay tuned! The pedestrian zone will be located along 18th Street NW between Kalorama and Columbia Roads NW on the following upcoming dates:

Sunday, September 4 from 12pm-10pm

Sunday, October 23 from 12pm-10pm

We may add an early November date and we anticipate the street closures would resume in the Spring of next year.

Don't forget the PUDO zones!
Attention restaurants within the boundaries of the AMPZ: please encourage your guests and food delivery services to utilize the designated and staffed Pick-up/Drop-off (PUDO) zones located just outside the AMPZ. As a reminder, there will be 3 Pick-up/Drop-off (PUDO) zones to allow for both rideshare and food delivery vehicles to temporarily park/idle. These zones will be clearly marked with large sandwich board signs and will be actively monitored by TCOs to prevent vehicles from being parked for more than 10 minutes. The PUDO Zone locations are indicated on the attached map and are located at:

The Adams Morgan Farmers Market is open for the season on
Saturdays from 8:30am – 1:00pm
, rain or shine, at UNITY PARK, Columbia Rd and Euclid St. NW. The market will be open every Saturday through December.
Music at the Farmers Market
With help from a grant from the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR), we have hired a musician, Heidi Martin, to perform at the farmers market on Saturdays. In addition to playing folk music and jazz, she will also set aside a couple sets for children's music and will have instruments with her so they can participate. Heidi began as lead 3’s teacher with a joyous circle time. “Music 2Little Ears” grew into a creative set of children’s music performances, classes and private lessons. She is also a DC Jazz Festival Education Coordinator and a professional vocalist and composer.

$1.3 Million in Grants for Small Businesses
|
Walker's Legacy is a proud founding partner of the
Coalition to Back Black Businesses
. From 2020 through 2023, we will distribute $5,000 grants to applicants each fall, followed by mentorship and training. A select few will receive $25,000 enhancement grants the following summer.
Through the Coalition, Walker's Legacy will work together over the next four years to provide over $14 million in grants, training, and resources to empower Black-owned small businesses in distressed communities that have long been struggling with economic growth.

DMPED is updating Washington, DC’s economic development strategy to guide economic development efforts for the next five years. The new strategy will replace DC’s current Economic Strategy, which expires in 2022.
The new strategy will focus on how economic development efforts can drive tax revenue, resident economic mobility, and business vitality and competitiveness, taking into account the enduring effects of the pandemic. It will establish new goals, metrics, and plans for action and build on recent work, including the District’s Comprehensive Plan and the Mobility Action Plan, a new framework for resident mobility that visualizes how DC residents might take advantage of District housing, financial well-being, and workforce programs to reach their personal and financial goals. Strategy development will also be informed by related efforts currently in progress, including the Build Back Better Infrastructure Task Force and Tax Revision Commission. The final plan will be released in early 2023.

CORE Project/Barry Gutin Introduction

The Mayor's Office of Nightlife and Culture (MONC) would like to introduce Barry Gutin, CEO of Cuba Libre, located in Downtown. He approached MONC with a wonderful program created to assist the children of nightlife employees called
Children of Restaurant Employees, Ltd, otherwise known as CORE
. We can all appreciate the amount of hours and dedication people put into their jobs in the service industry so it's tragic when they aren't able to afford care for their children in times of need.
This Sunday, August 28, 2022 will serve as the CORE Day of Service.
This will be an opportunity to deliver posters for back of house in restaurants to display, educate and inform staff of the program.

Ditch the Disposables: More Funding Available
|
Summer is winding down and fall is just around the corner! With a change in seasons comes new announcements (and some reminders) for the District’s restaurants, coffee/tea shops, and other food-serving entities… including more funding for Ditch the Disposables!
First, an exciting update:
The Ditch the Disposables program has awarded its first-ever reusable foodware grants! These funds are for food-serving entities to make long-term transitions from disposable to reusable foodware. This year, the program funded 17 projects totaling $240,798. Visit the

Next, an equally exciting announcement: Ditch the Disposables will return for a second year!

WEC Career and Education Fair
|
Washington English Center invites you to participate in our Diversity Career and Education Fair, to be held on Friday, September 16, 2022 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM.

The fair is open to our current adult English language students, graduates and the general public. WEC has partnered with community and professional organizations to recruit attendees and we anticipate candidates from a wide range of industries, functions and career levels to attend.
The purpose of this fair is to pair employers and community partners who have active or future employment or volunteer vacancies to fill with suitable candidates. WEC would also like to introduce students to training and study options in the region as many will need further licensing and education to break into the industries they practiced in their home countries. The hybrid model also means that we have students in 12 states outside of the DMV and 21 countries who are available for global and remote positions.
The Diversity Career and Education Fair will be held online via zoom. Additionally, if you are not available to participate in the fair, there are opportunities to join us on IG Live or visit our location in downtown Washington, DC.
