1) DC WATER to shut off water service on Monday night June 27 into Tuesday June 28th

DC Water is again notifying businesses and property owners about a scheduled water shut off - Monday night June 27th beginning at 9:00 PM into Tuesday morning June 28st at 7:00 am.

The DC Water crews encountered a problematic value during the June 20th -21st shut down located at the intersection of California Street and Florida Avenue. This prevented them from completing the work. That value is broken and leaking extensively.

Because of the length of time needed to fix this broken value, they need to start at 9 pm. We recognize this is a major problem for many businesses open on Monday night but Monday night was determined to be the best evening to perform this work.

The work on June 27th -28th will impact the 12-inch main serving all businesses and residential property in the 18th Street corridor. They anticipate the shut down to last for approximately 10 hours. All affected will receive notification from DC Water also. Once the value replacement is complete and has been deemed successful the water main will be recharged immediately.

2) Rodent walk-through with the Department of Health June 23rd

With the return of warm weather, we are doing monthly rat abatement with the Department of Health. Please join Gerard Brown from the Department of Health (gerard.brown1@dc.gov) and your BID neighbors for a walk through to review rat holes and other rat harborages. Mr. Brown and his DOH team will bait the locations we find and will return to continue to bait those locations. We will meet by the kiosk at 18th and Columbia Road (in front of BB&T Bank) tomorrow June 23rd at 3 PM. We will walk a number of alleys behind our commercial corridors. Please join us. 4) Biking isn't green if you harm a tree!

DDOT’s Urban Forestry Administration wants you to remember that biking isn’t green if you harm a tree!

Bikes are pretty easy to lock to a tree, but bad news for our defenseless timbers. The beautiful trees that add a little something pleasant to our streetscapes are being seriously harmed by the most unsuspecting group—bicyclists— and it is starting to become a big problem for our young trees.

DDOT would like to remind everyone, from the veteran cyclists to the two-wheeling newbies out there, that locking your bike to a tree is a big no-no, and even illegal, on trees less than 10” in diameter. While many of you use bicycling as an environmentally-friendly form of transportation, keep in mind that it isn’t green if you harm a tree. In addition to stunting the tree’s growth, it can also kill it, leaving us all with a pile of unattractive mulch in its place. So please, look around for the nearest available bike rack and secure your bike to that instead.
