1) AMPBID Annual Meeting board election results

The Annual Meeting of the AMPBID was on Tuesday, October 13, 2015 at 5pm, at the Festival Center at 1640 Columbia Road, NW. The following people were elected to serve on the board for the next term:

* Jessica White, property owner

* Matt Wexler, property owner

* Louis Courembis, property owner

* Constantine Stavropoulos, business owner

* Justin Abad, business owner

We will elect officers for FY2016 at the November board meeting. B Stanley from DC Arts Center will be the guest speaker at the November board meeting. Come learn about DC Arts Center on November 10th!

2) Reminder: Please post events on the BID website

As you know we launched a new website a few months ago. It is really important that all Adams Morgan businesses post their events and special sales or other things happening on the website. The form is short and should take a couple of minutes to complete! The website will only be as useful as the information you post on there! THIS IS ONLY FOR ADAMS MORGAN businesses! Thanks!

3) Rescheduled: Adams Morgan Porch Fest - October 24

We’re on our third year of Adams Morgan PorchFest — a celebration of the

deep musical talent that exists in the DC metro area. Last year 40+ musicians/

bands participated including members of the National Symphony Orchestra.

We transformed the front porches, patios and stoops of Adams Morgan

homes and businesses into “stages for a day” where local talent could be

heard by all for free.

It was a ton of fun, thanks to many of you, with dozens of local music acts

playing about at a dozen locations in Adams Morgan. Neighbors gathered,

kids danced, and the streets came alive thanks to the generosity of musicians

sharing their art.

Adams Morgan PorchFest will be Saturday October 24th from 2pm-6pm

(an hour earlier because it gets dark earlier by then). This will follow the

Adams Morgan Apple Festival and apple pie contest that morning at the

Farmer's Market.

From famous jazz legends like Charlie Byrd and Keter Betts to homegrown

soul acts like Father’s Children, Adams Morgan has a rich music tradition that

PorchFest hopes to continue.

We will need more musicians because of the postponement so please help us

spread the word about Adams Morgan PorchFest. We’d like to grow this

bigger and better each year. We do still need volunteers to staff each of the

porches. Cultural Tourism DC helps us recruit volunteers. Please visit them

Saturday, October 24, 2015

Festivities start at 10:00am

At the Adams Morgan Farmer's Market in the SunTrust Plaza at 18th and

Columbia Road, NW open 8:00am – 1:00pm

Festival Events:

10:00am – Pies delivered

10:00am – 11:30am – Sign up for People’s Choice Judges – This is first

come first serve. The first 4 people to sign up will become the

People’s Choice Judges

10:30am – Heirloom Apple Tasting

11:45am – Apple Pie Contest

12:45PM – Announcement of winners

Heirloom apple varieties will include:

Arkansas Black (1833) (aka Black Twig), York Imperial (1800), Paradise

(France, 1400), Rusty Coat (old!!), Golden Russett (NY, 1845), Lady (France,

1600), Winter Banana (1876), VA Winesap (1866), Sweet Banana (1870's),

Grimes Gold (1832), Lady Katrina (200 years old on our farm), Northern Spy

(1800), Washington Strawberry (1791), and others!

The Apple Pie Contest Judges include:

...and the first 4 residents to sign up that morning at 10 am!

After the contest, pies will be sold by the piece for $5.00, the proceeds will go

to Christ House, a local Adams Morgan non-profit. The pie winner will receive a
2-week CSA membership from the Farmer's Market.

To enter the apple pie contest:

Email Kristen Barden at kbarden@adamsmorganonline.org No Later Than

Friday October 16 at 12 noon with your name, phone number and type of

apple pie you will make. Local Adams Morgan businesses are welcome to

enter the competition.

Anyone who enters before the cut off can select their apples at the Licking

Creek Bend Farm stand at the Adams Morgan Farmer’s Market on Saturday,

October 17 FOR FREE.

Please bring a card with your ingredients so that we may accommodate dietary

restrictions. Please make a minimum of 3 pies.

You can make more but please let us know how many you plan to make.

We hope that folks will be able to enjoy tasting the pies as well.

5) New project - Welcome bags!

Calling All Adams Morgan Businesses!

With new residential developments come new residents, and potentially new customers for you. As we have done in the past, we will be assembling "welcome bags" to introduce the newest members of our community to you with deals, discounts, giveaways, edible treats...anything you can think of that will help make your business memorable. Local businesses are the most convenient option for new residents of Adams Morgan...but knowing you're here, how to find you and what you offer is critical.

We hope to distribute several hundred bags in October, so please let us know if you would like to include something from your business (we would need a few hundred of whatever you provide) and we will coordinate a pick up time. Ideally, we would have these items in hand in the next 10 days, with perishable items (already packaged with your business name attached) provided on the final day, Friday, October 16th

If you want to participate but have a problem making that deadline, please share that with us. The more businesses that participate, the greater the impact this promotion will have. We will assemble the bags early next week.

6) Save the Date: Small Business Saturday - November 28th

We have signed up to be a neighborhood champion for the annual Small Business Saturday on November 28th. See: https://www.americanexpress.com/us/small-business/shop-small

We will have lots of things to distribute to businesses but we also want to coordinate and promote whatever activities you have planned for the day - special discounts, freebies, live music, whatever you are doing. Please let us know so we can promote it.

More activities to be announced but we want you to get started thinking about what you will do.

7) Lights of Adams Morgan contest!

Boost Your Holiday Business through The Lights of Adams Morgan

Some of the volunteers, both business owners and residents, who helped organize Adams Morgan Day are starting a new project — The Lights of Adams Morgan — a month-long series of holiday decorations, lights and activities during the month of December.

We would love for your business to participate! An important element involves as many businesses as possible dressing their storefronts and display windows for the holidays, so that shoppers and diners notice a visible difference and are drawn to the businesses of Adams Morgan for their holiday shopping and cheer. We recommend you do any of the following:

▪ Decorate your storefront and display windows for the holidays;

▪ Create a holiday menu items or offer holiday products;

▪ Donate prizes to go to the best decorated businesses;

▪ Organize your own holiday events or sales;

▪ Hold charity drives; or

▪ Host an event organized by The Lights of Adams Morgan volunteers.

The Lights of Adams Morgan volunteers will publicize holiday activities in Adams Morgan, through press, social media, list serves and word of mouth. Be sure to report your holiday plans by emailing john.zottoli@gmail.com or calling John at 202-506-5912.

Preliminary ideas include a specified evening to launch the month-long celebration of the season, requesting choral groups to walk our main corridors caroling, seeking sponsors, and incorporating existing or new philanthropic holiday projects. The main purpose is to show holiday spirit and to draw new holiday traffic to the businesses of Adams Morgan.
