1) Song Byrd Music House and Record Cafe coming to 2477 18th Street, NW
We noticed over the weekend the signage at Federal and Zkabob changed to Song Byrd. Talking to Joe we learned they will soon take over both spaces. Could this be an homage to the days of Charlie Byrd, Keter Betts and Stan Getz of the former Show Boat that was at 2477 18th Street, NW until the late 1960s? We hope so. This is exciting news! 4) Spocktoberfest at the Black Squirrel on Friday September 19th

5) DDOT begins ADA Compliance work in 1600 block of Columbia Road, NW
The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will commence repair work as part of the Americans with Disability Act Compliance Project on the
1600 block of Columbia Rd. NW
on
September 25, 2014.
Construction is scheduled to last about
six days,
weather and construction conditions permitting. The purpose of the repair work is to ensure that people with disabilities can access sidewalks and bus stops. It will include repair to sidewalks, curb and gutter, driveways, and installing wheelchair ramps.
The Contractor is authorized to work during the hours of 7:00 am to 7:00 pm, Monday through Saturday. There will be no work at night.
If deemed necessary, Parking Restriction signs will be posted at least 72 hours in advance, at locations where parking will not be allowed. These signs will notify the dates and duration of “No Parking,” and contact information of the Project Engineer.

6) PEPCO's Harvard Conversion Project continues
Crews are making progress on the Harvard Conversion project. We wanted to provide a quick update on the construction schedule.
Next week crews will continue to install new conduit between 1682 and 1720 Columbia Rd., NW. On approximately October 1st, crews will transition to installing new underground conduit between 1682 and 1637 Columbia Rd., NW.
If you have any questions about any of this information or the project, please let Chris Taylor know and he will be glad to follow up.
As a reminder, the Harvard Conversion project involves increasing capacity of underground feeders from 4kV to 13kV . To achieve the conversion, new pipes (conduits) must be installed to house the new 13 kV cables. Next, crews will install the new cable. Finally, customers will be transitioned from the old feeder to the new feeder. During this phase of the project, we will construct approximately 4,000 feef of conduit, 11 manholes, and 2 switches. These upgrades will enhance reliability for customers in the area.

Great Streets legislation - we need your help!
In March 2014, Ward 1 CM Jim Graham introduced legislation to include Adams Morgan, the 14th and U Streets Corridor and a portion of Columbia Heights to the Great Streets Program.
The legislation is c
alled:
B20-0721 - U Street/14th Street NW Great Streets Neighborhood Retail Priority Amendment Act of 2014

This legislation if passed, would enable Adams Morgan businesses to apply for the
Great Streets Small Business Capital Improvement Grants
. The boundaries of the Adams Morgan streets included in the legislation need to be expanded to include the full AMPBID boundaries but that was already discussed with CM Bowser and CM Graham. See below for more information about the grants.
The legislation was referred to Ward 4 CM Muriel Bowser's committee and a hearing was held on May 7th. The legislation has not moved out of the committee and there is no indication that CM Bowser intends to move it out of committee to go to the full DC Council for a vote.
So we need your help!

A Celebration of DC Murals and the art of collaboration
Perhaps more than any other art form, murals are inherently a community project. Artists need apprentices and helpers. And while humanity’s earliest authors of cave drawings might not have worried about permits, today most murals cannot begin without official sanction and support from the community. Building owners must agree. Given the number of difficulties muralists face, it’s inspiring that there is so much street art in the District of Columbia today.
At least three-dozen Latino murals exist or once existed in Washington D.C.
They span nearly half a century from 2013’s “My Place/Mi Lugar” in Columbia Heights to “El Pueblo sin murales…,” the city’s oldest street mural in Adams Morgan.
Hola Cultura has mapped them all and will present their work at next week’s event. Everyone is invited. Please join us because murals are, after all, a community affair.
Preserving murals also takes collective action. The restoration of “El Pueblo sin murales…” in Adams Morgan this Spring was the second time this 1970s masterpiece of street art has been saved from oblivion thanks to collective action.
Government agencies such as the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities and the Mayor’s Office on Latino Affairs provided key funding along with the Adams Morgan Partnership Business Improvement District (AMPBID), the ANC1C and Perseus Realty.
The building owner, Manh Phung, was also supportive of the restoration needed after the 2011 earthquake. Kristen Barden, Executive Director of the AMPBID, was key to raising all of the funding for this latest round of restorations. DC Arts Center served as fiscal sponsor.
Hola Cultura also played a small role, editorializing in favor of its preservation and following the story for months before local artist Juan Pineda hoisted his first paint can in April 2014 to repair the original work by Carlos Salazar and an earlier generation of community members.
Our DC Latino Murals Map also took collective effort. Hola Cultura’s summer 2014 interns got the project off the ground. Perry Frank and her team at the DC Murals project provided key historic information and photographs.
Hola Cultura has mapped the murals with help from MapStory.org, a nonprofit organization they found out about through to the Dream Lab at the DC Public Library.
The work wouldn’t have been possible without a number of sponsors: the DC Arts Center, the Washington DC Mayor’s Office on Latino Affairs, and the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities.
Hola Cultura is very happy to partner with the Carlos Rosario International Public Charter School to hold this event on DC Latino muralism at the auditorium of the school’s Harvard Street campus.
The Smithsonian Latino Center and artists Carlos Arrien, Jorge Somarriba, Karla “Karlisma” Rodas, Juan Pineda, and Laya Monarez also contributed photos and knowledge and several of the artists will be present on September 24 to get the conversation started.

The Washington DC Crowdfunding Challenge is a pilot program that will provide crowdfunding services to entrepreneurs and small business owners who will be showcased to a community of “Capital City Sharks” for potential product or project funding.
National Crowdfunding Services (NCS) will introduce several DC-based entrepreneurs and business owners to our “Capital City Shark Stage” every month. The audience will then have an opportunity to support one or several companies by going online and making a purchase or providing other forms of support.
