, DC in Motion’s latest community collaboration showcase in partnership with the Adams Morgan Partnership Business Improvement District. DC in Motion is a community that strives to cater to all things motion graphics/animation in the DC area. We invited animators, illustrators, and motion designers alike to create wicked windows with anything from possessed novels flying around bookstores to zombies thrifting for fashion. Now, these visions from artists across the country will be brought to life via looped animations projected onto the storefronts and buildings in the Adams Morgan district of Washington, DC.

We are starting today’s message off with a little recap of what is going on with Congress, because at this point things have gotten a bit messy. The $3.5T “Build Back Better Act (BBBA)”, which is pending now in Congress, represents the top priority of the Biden Administration and congressional Democrats. The bill makes significant investments in government functions that would ultimately benefit our industry (child care, early childhood education, improvements to mass transit). However, the legislation in its current form would modify the tax code and could lead to some increases by removing key deductions for small businesses, increasing estate tax liability for family-owned businesses, and increasing corporate taxes for large restaurant companies. The National Restaurant Association has put together a plan and campaign against tax increases for our industry. Some moderate Democrats in Congress have expressed opposition to both the price tag and the tax increases in the BBBA, and it is likely the size of the bill will shrink.
Also still pending is the infrastructure bill that passed the Senate. Progressive Democrats in the House are seeking pledges that the BBBA will pass Congress before agreeing to pass a $1T bipartisan infrastructure bill that passed the Senate earlier this year. The future of the bills change frequently and at this point neither include replenishing RRF. However we are working with the National Restaurant Association, Independent Restaurant Coalition, and all State Restaurant Associations nonstop to advocate for replenishing RRF. The momentum is there to get this done but it's not too late to reach out to Congress by

Grant Opportunity.
National LGBT Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC) and Grubhub have come together to provide vital assistance for LGBTQ+-owned and allied restaurants, cafes, bars serving food, and other eating establishments. The NGLCC & Grubhub Community Impact Grant program provides a financial lifeline to those impacted by COVID-19 with grants expected to range from $5,000 to $100,000. To be eligible for the Community Impact Grant, applicants must:

Be an LGBTQ+-owned or LGBTQ+ ally-owned restaurant, bar or café that serves food.

Demonstrate loss of business due to COVID-19. This information will not be shared beyond the judging panel and will only be used for eligibility purposes.

Provide proof that you are an LGBTQ+-owned or allied establishment.
Applications must be submitted by 11:59PM PT on Tuesday, October 12, 2021. Partnership with NGLCC or Grubhub is not a requirement for application.

, we have scheduled a date for our industry’s meeting with MPD Chief of Police, Robert Contee on Thursday, October 21st at 2pm at Cork Wine Bar and Market (1805 14th St NW). This meeting is in response to the increase in senseless crime throughout the city. It is critical that you, your staff and your diners feel safe, and recent criminal activity has brought this into question. Also in DC
, MPD and DDOT are warning restaurant owners and valet drivers that their operations provide more opportunities for motor vehicle theft, which is on the rise. The MPD states that most of the recent motor vehicle theft cases involve vehicles left running or with the keys in the ignition. Recently, valet stands have been targeted for this type of theft. MPD strongly advises users to turn off their ignitions, remember to remove keys and hand them directly to the valet drivers. You may nominate one company, organization, or person, where applicable, in each of the seven categories that business resides and is registered in the District of Columbia. Finalists announced October 12th and winners at the Local First Awards in November.
The categories are:

Builder:
A local community developer, investor, or lender with deep roots in the community and known for positive investments in DC’s people, culture, and future.

Community Champion:
A local business owner who makes a significant and noticeable impact in the community.

DC Maker:
A local business, entrepreneur, or artist who designs, makes, produces, and/or assembles a product in the District of Columbia that makes an impact.

Green Thumb:
An environmental champion who works to improve the local community through sustainable practices, products, or services. This local business or individual significantly reduces waste or consumption, creates green products, and/or provides green services.

High Road:
A model employer who puts their people first by providing quality jobs, fostering a positive work environment, and championing beneficial business practices.

Pioneer:
A local business, entrepreneur, or artist who inspires with a creative new idea, product, perspective, model, and/or solution.

Ripple Effect:
A business that supports the local economy by purchasing supplies and services from other local businesses, creating a “ripple effect” as money circulates within the local community.

Empowered Women International, a program of the Latino Economic Development Center, and KAMA DC partner will honor Hispanic Heritage Month by hosting a storytelling night featuring entrepreneurs who will speak on the theme of celebrating female entrepreneurship.
Hispanic Heritage Month is from September 15th to October 15th and is dedicated to recognizing the important influence and contributions Hispanic Americans have had on the United States. This event will highlight Hispanic/Latinx female entrepreneurs, and speakers will share stories on their accomplishments, innovations, inspirations, origins, and creativity related to becoming entrepreneurs in a foreign country.
The event is free, though donations are appreciated!
KAMA DC is a volunteer-run non-profit that seeks to build community through immigrant-led cultural experiences. They provide a platform for immigrants to share their skills and stories with the DC community.
