Adams Morgan Day returns (online) Sunday!
|
Join neighbors, friends, and businesses for a day of food, music, and (virtual) fun as Adams Morgan comes together in solidarity and celebration on September 13, 2020 for Adams Morgan Day! For over 40 years, Adams Morgan Day has been a family-friendly celebration with music, art and activities. As DC’s longest running neighborhood festival, we welcome residents and visitors alike to meet our neighborhood businesses, artists, and service organizations. Although the event will be held virtually this year, we are excited to be part of this fun, safe alternative to honor our vibrant community.

National Small Business Week 2020
|
This week, Jovita Carranza, Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration, announced the kick-off for National Small Business Week. The virtual event, rescheduled from May due to the coronavirus pandemic, will be held
September 22-24
. National Small Business Week honors the nation’s small businesses, many of which are veteran, women and minority-owned, for their achievements and dedication to their communities.
This year’s National Small Business Week activities will include numerous educational panels providing retooling and innovative practices for entrepreneurs as our nation’s small businesses look to pivot and recover toward a stronger economy. The event will recognize the national award winners, including the naming of this year’s National Small Business Person of the Year.

If you haven’t already, we encourage you to fill out this
5-minute survey
that will help us assess the state of our industry and will guide our advocacy efforts going into the fall. It is important as we move forward to best understand what worked, what didn’t, losses, gains and considerations going forward.
It is CRITICAL that we are able to present an accurate picture of the state of our industry that is rooted in data. Please take the below survey that corresponds with your jurisdiction, and we encourage you to share this survey with other restaurant owners and neighboring eateries so our data is complete.
Mayor Bowser released an updated list of high-risk states that require a mandatory 14-day quarantine for people who travelled to these states for nonessential reasons.

Finally, on the national relief front while negotiations have stalled on a broad bipartisan COVID package, Senate Republicans are introducing targeted legislation that – while short of what either side prefers – would provide relief. There will likely be a procedural vote this week to consider the bill, however Democrats are expected to filibuster the motion to proceed to the legislation. The legislation does provide a few key mechanisms of relief outlined below, however the future of this legislation is unknown.

The bill includes temporary, targeted liability protections for employers, who are making reasonable efforts to follow public health guidelines.
-
A critical pillar of the bill would provide $257.8 billion to allow entities that satisfy criteria to apply for a second PPP loan of up to $2 million.
-
The legislation would provide $300 per week in enhanced unemployment benefits.
-
The bill would provide $16 billion for testing and contact tracing; $31 billion for vaccine and therapeutic development and distribution; $20 billion for farmers; and $500 million to fisheries.
As you know, the National Restaurant Association has been advocating tirelessly for federal relief for our industry. And this legislation is an important step.

Hearing on CBE Program & Independent Compliance Office
|
Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie introduced and is holding a virtual hearing on legislation that would create an independent compliance office. The bill, the “
Independent Compliance Office Establishment Act of 2019
," would remove the monitoring, oversight, and enforcement aspects of the CBE Act from DSLBD and insert it into a new independent office that is not an agency under the Mayor.

Have You Spotted the New Safety Signage in Adams Morgan?
|
You may have noticed our meme-like safety signage that has been installed throughout the neighborhood! With signs featuring Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg (RBG), Alexander Hamilton, tons of cute puppies, and famous people named Ryan, it has certainly created a buzz both locally and nationally!
Big thanks to the
Greater Washington Hispanic Chamber of Commerce
for helping us to translate and purchase 30 new yard signs in Spanish to distribute around Adams Morgan!
Due to the large volume of requests, the Adams Morgan Partnership BID is excited to offer the public an opportunity to purchase our health and safety signs for personal use. The signs are exactly the same as the ones posted around Adams Morgan and are approximately 24 inches by 18 inches. The signs do NOT come with the metal stakes (those are available at many hardware and craft stores).
We expect orders to be ready within 1-3 weeks
-- we do not have an active inventory -- signs are printed after they are ordered. Signs are available for shipping or local pick up.
Please note that funds received above and beyond the cost of printing and shipping will be used to produce additional safety signage for our neighborhood in support of local businesses.
