#AdMoThanksObama
The election is over and as the dust is settling and the future is uncertain, we've decided that now is the perfect time to look back over the last eight years and give the Adams Morgan community a chance to show their appreciation to the Obamas and welcome them to the neighborhood.
We have taken over three sides of the message board kiosk in front of BB&T Bank at the corner of 18th St. and Columbia Rd., NW and have installed chalkboards with chalk to encourage people to stop and scribble a few words or even draw a picture.
We can't promise that the Obamas will see everything on the board, but we'll be photographing it regularly and sharing those images online so that the rest of the city/country/world can see what we're doing and perhaps share their thoughts as well.
The chalkboards will remain in place for the month of December. Once it is completed, the project will be donated to the DC Historical Society.

It's Christmas Tree Time!
from Licking Creek Bend Farms
(at the Adams Morgan Farmers Market):
For those of you who haven't ordered yet, we're taking orders UNTIL MONDAY, DEC 5 for this coming week's pick up (starting Thursday, Dec 8) So, if you want your Christmas tree for next weekend, please get us your order no later than this coming Monday.
There's time to order for the following weeks, by Monday, Dec 12 for that week and by Monday, Dec 19, for the week before Christmas.
Below is the information you will need about the varieties we offer and how to order.
We usually send out our Christmas Tree email Thanksgiving weekend, but since so many of you have been anxious to order, we're sending this out before Thanksgiving. For us, your enthusiasm about our trees is heartening and we are quite touched by your support for the kind of trees we grow. Our trees take 15-20 years to grow (unlike commercial, chemically treated trees that take 5-7 years!). And, of course our trees are cut within a few days of your pickup (commercial trees are cut in September or October and treated with preservatives and color dyes). Check out this lovely video done by GWU students last year about our Christmas Trees:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TsdjXunLt4
This was an unusually dry year so you’ll want to put up your tree closer to Christmas so it will last longer through New Years. The dryness for some of the trees may shorten the vibrant life of the pesticide-free tree after it is cut.
Below is our unchanged (from last year's) flyer with most of the information you will need to order. Please, Please, give us an exact date you want to pick up as we cut to order each week and need to be specific about the numbers so we don't cut too many or too few.
ADAMS MORGAN PICK UPS
For Adams Morgan pickups, we bring your tree to our market on Saturdays (8:00am- 1:00pm). Folks walking by always see a tree they like, but if it is tagged, we won't sell it. However, by 1:00pm, if you have not picked up your tree (and we haven't heard from you by phone - 240 505-6281 or 6282), we might sell it to someone who really wants it and comes back to see if it was picked up. So, be sure you pick a Saturday you can pick up, or, contact us with changes.
HOW TO ORDER:
This is the information we need for you to email and remember to order at least one week in advance of the date you want to pick up:
NAME
EMAIL
PHONE NUMBER
TYPE OF TREE
HEIGHT
PICK UP DATE (please be specific)
PLACE TO PICK UP
WREATH ORDER
ROPE (#ft)
HOLLY SPRIGS
BOUGH (pieces of cut trees for decoration)
Our prices have not changed from last year, continuing our commitment to making trees affordable. Please talk with us about special considerations. We want to be sure everyone can have a joyous holiday.
If you are planning to give a tree as a gift to a teacher, a limited-income family, or community worker, you can have them contact us to come and pick one out in your price-range. We discount gift trees. If you know of a family who can’t afford a tree, we’ll have a limited number of trees we can donate anonymously. Also, we donate to some trees to shelters.
Let us know if you have any questions, you can email (esiegel2@igc.org) or call 301 587-1739. But please make your order by email. Saturdays, call 240 505-6281 or 6282 during market hours.
THINKING ABOUT FRESH CUT HOLIDAY CHRISTMAS TREES? HOW ABOUT AN ECO-TREE?
We've been farming sustainably on the Licking Creek Bend Farm since 1972. Although we rotate vegetable fields yearly, we have about 8 acres of marginal land Christmas trees have proven to be a viable and earth-conscious choice. Going against industry standards, we grow trees without the use of herbicides (which stop the growth of weeds, but pollute the soil and water), pesticides or artificial colors. The results have been attractive, natural-looking, fresh- cut trees free of pesticides, sprays or colors. Although more intensive manual labor is used to grow them, we keep them affordable at $20 - 125 a tree. (Customers are encouraged to come in the spring and help plant new trees).
HERE’S WHAT WE HAVE AVAILABLE THIS YEAR:
CHARLIE BROWN TREES
-- These trees are all imperfect but have their own character and look nice.
$20 – 40 range under 6ft. Over, add $5/foot.

We pray for calmness to come to our troubled world and we can all find peace and loving kindness under our homes and communities this year.
