1)
Welcome to a new business in the neighborhood!
We are pleased to welcome the opening of "With Love Health and Reflexology" in the lower level at 2122 18th Street, NW (below Skynear Designs and Cafe Diem). With Love specializes in acupressure, Swedish massage, deep tissue massage and relexology.
Their hours are: Monday - Saturday 10 am to 9 pm and Sunday 12 noon to 8 pm. They can be reached at 202-588-8589.
2) Remember: Small Business Saturday - November 29th
Small Business Saturday (SBS)
made an impact in Adams Morgan a few years back when Adams Morgan Main Street won a competition for an American Express sponsored ad campaign which featured some of our businesses.
This year SBS falls on Novem
ber 29th, between Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
The AMPBID has signed on as a Neighborhood Champion and have already received boxes of promotional materials aimed at connecting local businesses to this national effort to Shop Small. Tote bags, welcome mats, signage, etc. are available to participating businesses, for example, but the website has ways to brand your online presence too.
The most important of these is adding your business to an online map that shows shoppers who want to support local businesses that your business is part of the campaign
.
There is also a way to access and integrate SBS branding into your digital presence.

The success of SBS relies on a group of businesses in a community
coordinating their activities so that the neighborhood becomes a destination for shoppers on Small Business Saturday.
Please let us know as soon as possible if you are interested in participating in Small Business Saturday so we can add you to the press release and other things we are doing. The press release will be sent on Monday November 17th.
In the same vein as the British motivational poster before WWII, "Keep Calm and Carry On", our theme will be Stay Calm and Shop Small.

5) Mary's Center Thanksgiving Food Drive and Fundraiser at Town Tavern
Our closest event is our annual

. Mary’s Center is currently accepting canned food donations, as well as frozen turkey through
November 21st
. We also have Tryst, Casa Oaxaca, Roofers Union, and , Medstar collecting canned food donations for us.

, Town Tavern at 2323 18th Street, NW will be hosting a Drink 4 A Cause fundraiser where they will be collecting canned food donations as well as $5 monetary donations for drink specials.

6) News from the Grill from Ipanema at 1858 Columbia Road, NW
The Grill from Ipanema is having Live Music this Sunday, November 16th from 6:00PM-10:00PM. Also on December 4th, they are having an Open Mic Comedy Night from 8PM-10:30PM. They had a show last Thursday night and everyone enjoyed it so they will offer that again.
Don't forget the weekly "Neighbor Appreciation Day" offer every Tuesday for Adams Morgan neighbors (of course, they would love to be accommodating and serving every resident every day!). Every Tuesday enjoy a complimentary appetizer or dessert with a purchase of two entrees.

Remembering Ann Hargrove

We have lost an icon. Ann Hughes Hargrove won the Individual Lifetime Achievement Award in May 2013 at the 10
th
Annual Awards for Excellence in Historic Preservation. "Ann Hargrove: Active in the establishment of two historic districts, this preservationist and veteran community zoning advocate was also a driving force in efforts to curb billboards in the District’s commercial historic districts."
Having moved to Adams Morgan in the 60's, she led the fight to preserve its neighborhood character and stopped the planned freeway system that would have bisected & demolished where we now live in beautiful row houses & historic period apartment buildings. Ann was a force of nature and fount of information on many issues, but especially zoning, history, and preservation. We "take ‘her’ for all in all, ‘we’ shall not look upon ‘her’ like again."
Ann is mourned and celebrated by her many friends and colleagues.
Ann was a true friend, steadfast & giving. She brought tamales back from Texas. Ann took me to doctors and to chemo, sat with me when first I came home from surgery, and generally ran errands and shopped. When she became ill herself, she handled it on her terms with grace & in harmony with her life partner, husband Larry.
Ann passed from this life at home in his arms on Nov. 7. (Memorial service is 10:30 am Saturday Nov. 15 at St. Stephen Episcopal Church, 1525 Newton St, NW)

Small Business Legal Clinic - November 22nd
There is a Small Business Brief Advice Legal Clinic on Saturday, November 22, 2014, 9:30am - 12:00pm. The site is the DC Women's Business Center which is located at 727 15th Street NW on the 10th Floor.
The DC Women's Business Center and the DC Bar Pro Bono Program are working together to offer this free legal clinic. This clinic is for aspiring or existing small business owners. Attendees will meet one-on-one with attorneys for brief advice on any legal issues their businesses may be facing.

Adams Morgan Farmers Market offerings for Saturday November 15
ADAMS MORGAN FARMERS MARKET
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 15

RAIN OR SHINE OR COLD!
So, last Saturday we sold out early of our FRESH-PRESSED, UNPASTEURIZED CIDER (along with a warning label re unpasteurization), made from our own PESTICIDE-FREE STAYMAN-WINESAP, MUSTSU and YORK APPLES! The Cider was tart and tangy taste and easily be made into hard cider! Quantities are again limited so try to come before 10:00am this Saturday. We'll have samples to taste and hopefully more next week. Michael did the second pressing on Friday, so the cider is quite fresh and should last for a week.
If you want it to go "hard" check out how to do it on line - it's fairly easy.
The APPLES are GRANNY SMITHS. Because more of the Stayman-Winesaps are going into cider, we're unsure how much longer we'll have these pesticide-free treats. Try the GOLD RUSH, CAMEO AND BRAEBURN also.
Our LEEKS, CELERIC and other goodies will be there along with several varieties of HOT PEPPERS. We'll also have local WINTER SQUASH, KALE, SWEET POTATOES and other seasonal produce.
And, we'll have a limited amount of our HONEY this week.
Email us ahead of time if you want APPLES by the box.
And, for those of you who have been asking, we will have some of the delicious and FRESH-ROASTED PEANUTS again. Very addictive and they sell out early!
Don't forget to bring bags, pt and qt containers.
See you Saturday at the market and dress early and wear a hat!
