The next Adams Morgan Partnership BID (AMPBID) Board of Directors' meeting will be Tuesday, September 9th, 2014 at 5 PM at the Festival Center at 1640 Columbia Road, NW.  Hope you can join us! An agenda will be sent out before the meeting.

Annual Meeting - October 14

The Annual Meeting of the AMPBID will be Tuesday, October 14, 2014 at 5pm, at the Festival Center at 1640 Columbia Road, NW. Postcards will be mailed to all property owners and business owners this week.

AMPBID Annual Meeting Election Process

At the October 14th Annual Meeting, BID members will have the opportunity to vote for candidates for 5 board slots: three property owners and two business owners. The board members currently holding those positions have been renominated for another term and have agreed to serve if elected.

Those are:

* Steve Greenleigh, property owner

* Pat Patrick, property owner

* Jeffrey Schonberger, property owner

* Al Jirikowic, business owner

* Saied Azali, business owner

AMPBID Annual Meeting Election Process

Each person eligible for election as a member of the Board may be nominated by: 1) the nominating committee, or 2) by a member petition submitted to the Chair of the Nominating Committee (Matt Wexler) at least 30 days prior to the date of the meeting (so additional nominations must be received by September 15th); provided that only business owners can nominate business owners and property owners can only nominate property owners and a petition shall require the signature of no less than ten (10) members to nominate a member of the Board. Each nominee either shall be present at the annual meeting or shall consent to such nomination by a written document.

Voting

Per the by-laws, any properties for which BID taxes are over 60 days delinquent, may not vote nor may they nominate members to the board.

For each class of member, the ballot will list all the candidate names, and members will vote for the number of open slots in that category. For example, there are two business owner slots. All members will have the opportunity to vote for two candidates from the list of all business owner candidates.

Proxies

Proxy votes are allowed.

Pursuant to the BID bylaws, those interested in voting in the board elections by proxy can either contact the BID to request a proxy form, or can develop their own form, as long as it includes: the date of the meeting at which it is applicable (October 15) full names, addresses and the dated signatures of both the individual issuing the proxy and the witness(es) to the signature. The proxy voter can be anyone to whom the property or business owner designates to vote for them and DOES NOT have to be a member of the Adams Morgan Partnership BID. All proxy forms must meet all these criteria to be accepted.

The BID will have a proxy form available by fax, mail and by email.

1) A big Adams Morgan welcome to Pop's Sea Bar!

Pop's Sea Bar is opening at 1817 Columbia Road, NW on Thursday September 4, 2014.

From their website: Pop's SeaBar is brought to you by business partners Chef John Manolatos and Justin Abad of Cashion's Eat Place.

The project is a Mom & Pop's, boardwalk-inspired, seafood bar and restaurant. The concept was inspired by the time that each of them spent on the Jersey Boardwalk (John) and Gulf Beaches of St. Petersburg, Florida (Justin) as children with their families.

It's a playful and referential look back at the care-free establishments that made "Going to the Beach" such an exciting thing to hear while growing up!

The mantra at Pop's: Everyone relax. It's a place where you can drink a cold, canned beer, sip on traditional boardwalk cocktails like an orange crush or Lime Rickey (with our twist, of course), and slurp down some oysters from our raw bar or snack on our "Famous Boardwalk Chicken" with friends and family.

While casual and friendly, the staff is comprised of true bar and culinary pros that take hospitality very seriously. And that's about the only thing we plan on taking seriously!

Join us for lunch or dinner 7 days a week and don't forget to stop by our sister restaurant, Cashion's Eat Place, right next door!

Their hours will be:
12pm-Midnight (Sunday through Thursday)

2) The Diner reopens today at 5 pm!

The Diner at 2453 18th Street, NW has finished its pause and resumes it's 24/7 operations today at 5 pm. Thanks to everyone's support for the last 13 years and they look forward to the next 13 years!

5) Carriage House hosts trivia on Wednesday nights

The Carriage House at 2333 18th Street, NW is now hosting a trivia night every Wednesday night at 7:30pm. It's a low-key location, and they dedicate the entire upstairs to trivia. The hosts, Josh (me) and Laura, have been doing trivia in AdMo for years, including at the Reef when it was still the Reef.

It's free to play, of course. We use the sound system to play music and use the mic, so there's no issue hearing the questions like other trivias. PLUS, we connect to the big screen TV so you can see the questions. There's five rounds: General 1, Music, General 2, Speed, and The Connection. We don't make it too easy, but anyone should be able to play since the range in topics is so big.

6) Rat Abatement continues on September 5th

The monthly rat abatement walk-through continues on the FIRST FRIDAY of every month from April through November at 11:00 am with DOH Rat Abatement Specialist, Gerard Brown and his team of specialists.

Each month we will focus on a different alley/street/problem area and DOH will treat for rats.

7) Networking lunch continues on September 5th

Do you have a home based business in Adams Morgan? Do you want to start-up a home based business and are interested in learning from others who’ve done that successfully? Or do you work from Tryst and wonder who else there might be based in Adams Morgan too?

If you are interested in networking with other home based businesses in Adams Morgan, the networking group will meet again for lunch on the first Friday of every month - next one is Friday September 5th from 12:30 to 2 pm at The Diner, 2453 18 th Street, NW, WDC 20009.

No need to RSVP, just show up. For planning purposes salads run $6.99 to 12.99 and sandwiches are $5.45 to $11.99 so lunch should not cost you more than about $15.00. Depending on level of interest, we will move this around each month to different restaurants.

Adams Morgan Farmers' Market offerings for Saturday August 30th

ADAMS MORGAN FARMERS MARKET - SATURDAY, AUGUST 23, 8:00AM - 1:00PM, RAIN OR SHINE

This is a peak season for our HEIRLOOM TOMATOES!  We're always surprised when a customer tells us they've never tasted them before and then rave about the taste!  We wonder if they are overlooked elsewhere because they are expensive and some supermarkets don't carry them.  We've seen them in some stores and markets at $6.00/lb!

This week we'll sell the 12 varieties of our HEIRLOOM TOMATOES at our regular price of $3.49.  However for 3lbs or more (that's about 3 large tomatoes), we'll discount them to $2.49/lb.  And, if you can use a flat (15-16lbs), we'll use our wholesale price of $1.99/lb.  Now's the time for sauce, ketchup, juice, gaspacho, etc.  The multi-colored CHERRY TOMATOES are the sweetest and richest we've ever grown!

MANGO NECTARINES - yes, we'll have some tomorrow!  If you haven't tried them, Saturday will be the last chance this season.  Even if you don't particularly like Nectarines, these are worth trying!

SUMMER SQUASH - they're fading as the season gets cooler, but we still have some - 8 varieties.

PEACHES - We think Sept. 9th will be the last date for peaches.  We'll bring extra down for Saturday, but if you want a 1/2 bushel of the "ripes" (25-30lbs for $25), please pre-order via email.  These are for use in cooking, baking, canning or freezing. Saturday we'll have some juicy LORING PEACHES along with a sweet RED (GLOWING STAR) and an heirloom white variety, 'GA BELLE" (Georga Belle).

EGGPLANTS - Folks have been enjoying the ASIAN varieties (sweet and delicate) as well as the white, purple and pale varieties.  Try them!  Don't pass by the cute 'FAIRY TAILS" also.

APPLES - We're close to having Galas.  But if you haven't tried the RAMBOS, ZESTARS and GINGER GOLDS, they'll be gone by next week.  We also have some of our newest variety of pesticide free RED APPLES. Plus, we picked some early STAYMAN WINESAPS!  Try some.

There's a good chance we'll have local CANARY or CRENSHAW MELONS.  These are very juicy and luscious.  Plus those small and sweet SEEDLESS WATERMELONS.  These are unusually good (some folks prefer seeded, but these are particularly tasty)!

Don't overlook the TOMATILLOS, OKRA, FAIRYTAIL BABY EGGPLANTS, amazing CHERRY TOMATOES, KALE, COLLARDS AND HERBS, along with other seasonal goodies.

Please bring BAGS, and PINTS AND QUARTS to return.

Car Free Day 2014

Pledge to be Car Free!

On September 22, you’ll have your chance to give your car keys the day off. International Car Free Day challenges millions of motorists around the world to reconsider getting behind the wheel for just one day. Around the DC region, there are many convenient options that will get you where you need to go –buses, trains and bikes – and we encourage you to take advantage of all the options the city has to offer. Take the pledge this year (it’s easy!) to go car-free—or at least car-lite—for the day, and help be a part of a movement away from car-dependency. Transit Ordinance: Bringing Commuter Benefits to your Employees


On June 15, the District of Columbia City Council unanimously approved a measure that will ensure that all commuters who travel to DC for work will have access to transportation benefits from their employer. Working with employers to provide transit benefits to employees in the District will help reduce rush hour demands on our roadways and expand opportunities for public transit while helping reduce employer payroll costs and improve employee retention.

This innovative measure, “Reducing Single Occupancy Vehicle Use by Encouraging Transit Benefits,” calls for all District employers with more than 20 employees to offer a transit benefit program by January 1, 2016.

That benefit can take the form of a pre-tax election transportation fringe benefit, an employer-paid benefit program of direct subsidy or an employee-provided transportation option at no cost to the employee. With this unique measure, we can help DC employers craft and implement a commuter benefit program that seamlessly integrates into your existing employee benefits package.

The new law will take effect after Congressional review and states that by January 1, 2016, covered employers with 20 or more employees need to provide one of three transit benefits programs to its employees:


•    A pre-tax election transportation benefits program that provides commuter highway vehicle, transit or bicycling benefits
•    An employer-paid benefits program that supplies a transit pass requested by the covered employee or reimbursement of vanpool or bicycling costs in an amount at least equal to the purchase price of a transit pass
•    Employer-provided transportation at no cost to the covered employee in a vanpool or bus operated by or for the employer
