Update on 18th Street Streetscape Construction

As we head into the final few Saturdays before the holiday, we’re hopeful that DDOT, Washington Gas, DC Water and Pepco will honor the commitment expressed on December 7th to suspend work on the 18th Street Streetscape project during these critical shopping days. Washington Gas asserted that no additional work would be performed on Saturdays, and has honored that thus far.

However, late on Friday December 9th we were notified that one crew would be on hand the following morning to open pedestrian walkways specifically at the "bump-outs" south of Kalorama Road, NW.  It was reported to us later on Saturday that crews also backfilled a trench where the road was closed at Kalorama and 18th Street and removed concrete ‘jersey’ barriers from the site in order to clean up the staging area and improve cars’ ability to access the garage just north of Belmont Road. The decision appears to have been made by foremen on site who thought this was a positive action, but we’ve strongly re-iterated the fact that any work on Saturdays , however unobtrusive, or well intentioned, is against the wishes of the businesses along the 18th Street corridor.

No work occurred at the intersection of 18th and Florida Ave. Work was completed by approximately 3 PM.

DC Water will be performing another water shut off on Monday night December 19th at midnight into Tuesday morning December 20th at 6 AM in support of the 18th Street Streetscape Construction.

The work on December 19th will perform needed tie-ins to each property of the newly installed water main. This work will impact businesses ONLY on the south side of Columbia Road between 18th and 17th Street - including McDonald's.  There are about 20-25 businesses affected. They anticipate the shut down to last for approximately 6 hours.

All affected will receive notification from DC Water also. Once the tie-ins are complete and has been deemed successful the water main will be recharged immediately.

Second Phase of One City, One Hire Campaign to lower unemployment and link businesses with skilled employees

Dept. of Employment Services to Collaborate with Other Agencies and Community Groups

In an effort to reach thousands of District residents who are out of work, Mayor Vincent C. Gray and officials from the D.C. Department of Employment Services (DOES) launched the second phase of the One City • One Hire campaign, an initiative the Mayor first announced in early September designed to encourage businesses in the Washington metropolitan area to hire qualified, unemployed District residents.

The initial focus of the campaign centered on creating public-private partnerships with local employers by offering them a number of DOES support services and incentives to help reduce the District’s high unemployment rate. One City • One Hire – Phase II will now focus on the needs of the District’s unemployed job seekers – particularly the thousands who are not in the system and, therefore, not being counted among the unemployed.

One City • One Hire has developed partnerships with over 330 businesses and helped over 1,000 District residents find jobs in the last 90 days.

One City • One Hire – Phase II has been designed to reach out to disconnected, unemployed District residents and get them registered in the DOES system. Once in the system, they can learn about various training programs offered by DOES to prepare them for the workforce. Qualified, unemployed residents who are registered at OneCityOneHire.org will be able to identify job opportunities that fit their skill sets and be pre-screened and matched with One City • One Hire employer partners who have job openings to fill.

One City • One Hire – Phase II will utilize a combination of traditional media (e.g., newspapers, television and radio) and new media (e.g., Facebook, Twitter and text messaging) to reach the unemployed. Public service announcements will air on local radio and TV stations and on the District’s cable channels in English, Spanish and other languages. Marketing collateral and other promotional materials being developed will also be translated in multiple languages and distributed citywide. In addition, the DOES Mobile One-Stop unit will register individuals at community events across the city, and registration events will be held in collaboration with local libraries, churches, and various community organizations in all eight wards.

Data gathered from the campaign will be analyzed to determine if individuals should be referred to a DOES special program or other social-services agencies to better prepare them for employment opportunities throughout the metropolitan area.
