New businesses open in Adams Morgan!
Döner Bistro opened this week at 1654 Columbia Road, NW (formerly Schwarma King)
The Döner Kebab (meaning “turning meat”) is a traditional Turkish dish served with rice on a platter. In the 1970’s, a Turkish entrepreneur in Germany altered this dish by stuffing the Döner meat into a flatbread with salad and sauce. This form better suited the German taste and hectic lifestyle, and its popularity quickly spread from Germany throughout Europe into Australia, Canada and across the world. Our version of the meat cones are made in house. We do not use pre-processed meat, fillers or preservatives. All our menu items are made to order right in front of your eyes!
Their hours are:
Mon. – Thur: 11am – 11pm
Fri. & Sat.: 11am – 3am
Sun.: 11am – 11pm

Pleasant Pops Farmhouse Market and Cafe (
www.pleasantpops.com
) at 1781 Florida Avenue, NW has been open for a few weeks now and are having an official grand opening this weekend.
DC Mayor Vincent Gray will be visiting the store to participate in a ribbon cutting on Saturday, October 6 at 1pm, kicking off the grand opening weekend with Adams Morgan Main Street and the Adams Morgan Partnership Business Improvement District.
The following day, Sunday, October 7, Pleasant Pops Farmhouse Market & Café is hosting a Grand Opening Sidewalk Fair from 2-5pm, including free samples, outdoor games, and a photo booth.
Pleasant Pops Farmhouse Market & Cafe is the culmination of three years of selling fresh fruit Mexican-style paletas for Roger Horowitz and Brian Sykora, the University of North Carolina graduates behind Pleasant Pops. Sykora and Horowitz make Pleasant Pops with fresh fruit, herbs and dairy from DC area farmers markets and started selling from a push cart at the Mt. Pleasant Farmers' Market in 2010 before expanding to more farmers markets and opening a food truck "Big Poppa" to sell pops around DC.
"We opened the Farmhouse Market & Café to bring the summer farmers market vibe straight to Adams Morgan year-round," Horowitz said. "We've hand-picked our favorite farmers goods and local vendors items to sell at the store in addition to our pops, Ceremony Coffee, salads, sandwiches, and soups."
The Grand Opening will showcase the local vendors that Pleasant Pops carries in the grocery section of the Farmhouse Market and Cafe. Free samples include products from Route 11 Chips (VA), Gordy's Pickles (DC), Langdon Wood Whiskey Aged Maple Syrup (DC). A sidewalk fair will include prizes from Pleasant Pops, a pops photo booth, cornhole, and other outdoor games.
In addition to these products, the newly opened Farmhouse Market and Cafe sells George Washington University student-owned Capitol Kombucha, Goldilocks Goodies gluten-free baked goods, Lyon Bakery bread, pastries from Blind Dog Cafe, Big Riggs Farms preserves, and Trickling Springs Farms dairy, including yogurt, milk, butter, and eggs.
In addition to the Grand Opening celebration, the store will be maintaining full open hours for regular menu sales, operating from 8:30am to 9pm. The Farmhouse Market & Cafe is open seven days a week baking scones, croissants and cookies, serving sandwiches and salads, brewing Ceremony Coffee locally roasted in Annapolis, and serving Pleasant Pops. The shop also has free wifi on weekdays. The store is open 7:30am - 9pm weekdays, and 8:30am - 9pm weekends.
Pleasant Pops Farmhouse Market & Café was backed by 423 donors on Kickstarter, making it one of the first online community funded shops in DC. Additionally, the company received an SBA-backed loan from a DC community bank to open its doors this September.

Race for the Cure is coming through Adams Morgan on October 13th
The Susan G. Komen Washington, DC 3-Day Walk for the Cure is walking through Adams Morgan on Saturday October 13th.
The walkers will be limited to the sidewalks and will be walking from Calvert Street down 18th Street to U Street, NW between 11 AM and 3:45 PM. Businesses are encouraged to set up cheering sections on their sidewalk cafe's and encourage staff and customers to cheer on the walkers. You could also put out balloons/signs/etc... to welcome the walkers to Adams Morgan and encourage them to return another time.
Event Description:
The 3-Day is a three-day, sixty-mile event that benefits The Susan G.
Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Participants walk 60 miles over the course of three days, approximately 20 miles each day. Each day, the route is open during daylight hours only.
The event opens on Friday, October 12, 2012 at the DC Armory Mall area starting at 7:00am. From there, participants will head out onto the route. Throughout the 60 miles, the participants are supported each step of the way. At no time will traffic be blocked in any manner. Participants walk only on sidewalks, shoulders and in bike lanes, and follow all pedestrian traffic laws.
They have a dedicated volunteer route safety crew who are stationed at various points along the route to make sure participants are abiding by all traffic laws and crossing streets safely. All along the route, six 12-passenger "Sweep" vans patrol the route picking up participants who are unable to continue walking. The last walker is escorted by an event staff member known as "the caboose" who is in constant communication with the event Command Center and is also tracked via a GPS locator.
Approximately every three to four miles, the participants will come upon a rest stop, or service area, designated as a Pit Stop, Grab & Go or Lunch Stop. We use city parks, local businesses, school and churches.
These organizations and their surrounding communities are an integral part of the 3-Day. The walkers pass by homes on foot and enjoy everything the city has to offer. Each rest stop has an opening and closing time, to ensure participants keep a pace that enables them to complete the route before sunset. Participants arriving after the designated closing time will board a coach bus and are moved ahead to either another stop along the route or to the end of the route.
On Sunday afternoon the participants will make their way through the city to end on The Washington Monument grounds. The Closing Ceremony is the emotional culmination for what has been a life changing three-day and sixty-mile walk. Participants begin to arrive at the Holding Area around noon and will continue to arrive until 4pm. The Ceremony begins at 4:30.
Each 3-Day walker commits to raising $2,300 or more for the cause.
They're not fundraising experts. They're not athletes. They're ordinary people who've been inspired to make a difference. Because they made the simple decision to do something bold, to not sit by while breast cancer takes its toll, lives will be saved.
Net proceeds from the 3-Day fund innovative global breast cancer research and local community programs supporting education, screening and treatment. Virtually every major advance in the fight against breast cancer in the last 28 years has been impacted by a Susan G. Komen for the Cure(r) grant.

Reminder: Annual Meeting is October 11
The Annual Meeting of the AMPBID will be Thursday, October 11, 2012 at 5pm, at the Third District Police Headquarters, 1620 V Street, NW. Postcards were mailed to all property owners and business owners at the end of August.
AMPBID Annual Meeting Election Process
At the October 11th Annual Meeting, BID members will have the opportunity to vote for candidates for 5 board slots: three property owners and two business owners. The board members currently holding those positions have been renominated for another term and have agreed to serve if elected.
Those are:
· Matt Wexler – Pharmacy Bar 2337 18th Street and Crumbs and Coffee 2700 Ontario Rd - property owner
· Kurt Meeske – Combined Properties – CVS Pharmacy, 7-11 and Game Stop 1755 - 1759 Columbia Road – property owner
· Louis Courembis – Southern Hospitality 1815 Adams Mill Road – property owner
· Constantine Stavropoulos – Tryst 2459 18th Street and The Diner 2453 18th Street – business owner
· Brian Vasile – Grand Central 2447 18th Street – business owner
AMPBID Annual Meeting Election Process
Each person eligible for election as a member of the Board may be nominated by: 1) the nominating committee, or 2) by a member petition submitted to the Chair of the Nominating Committee (Arianne Bennett) at least 30 days prior to the date of the meeting (THE NOMINATION PERIOD IS NOW CLOSED AND NO ADDITIONAL NOMINATIONS OR PETITIONS WERE RECEIVED); provided that only business owners can nominate business owners and property owners can only nominate property owners and a petition shall require the signature of no less than ten (10) members to nominate a member of the Board. Each nominee either shall be present at the annual meeting or shall consent to such nomination by a written document.
Voting
Per the by-laws, any properties for which BID taxes are over 60 days delinquent, may not vote nor may they nominate members to the board.
For each class of member, the ballot will list all the candidate names, and members will vote for the number of open slots in that category. For example, there are two business owner slots. All members will have the opportunity to vote for two candidates from the list of all business owner candidates.
Proxies
Proxy votes are allowed.
Pursuant to the BID bylaws, those interested in voting in the board elections by proxy can either contact the BID to request a proxy form, or can develop their own form, as long as it includes: the date of the meeting at which it is applicable (October 11) full names, addresses and the dated signatures of both the individual issuing the proxy and the witness(es) to the signature. The proxy voter can be anyone to whom the property or business owner designates to vote for them and DOES NOT have to be a member of the Adams Morgan Partnership BID. All proxy forms must meet all these criteria to be accepted.
The BID will have a proxy form available by fax, mail and by email.
Any questions on this process, please call Kristen at the BID office 202-997-0783 or email her at:
