National Legacy Business Preservation Survey Study
It is estimated that some 12 million small businesses across the country have owners reaching retirement. What happens to a small business and the community it operates in when the owner is ready to retire? As business owners reach retirement age, the threat of sale or closure of viable, valuable businesses increase. The risk of small business closure is particularly acute for businesses owned by people of color. These closures often have detrimental impacts on the surrounding community where these businesses function. Loss of legacy businesses may accelerate commercial turnover in rapidly changing neighborhoods with a high percentage of these businesses.
To address this situation, CNHED, DAWI and Citi Community are inviting you to participate in a “legacy business preservation survey study” to expand ownership opportunities, retain local business and preserve valuable asset in the community.
The purpose of the survey is to:
-
Understand the pressures and challenges businesses owned by people of color face.
-
Learn about business owners current thinking regarding both succession planning in general and potential sale to their employees in particular.
Are you a business owner with three employees or more?

"Bitches Brew" Arts Community Networking Event at Songbyrd
SOUTHEASTERN ROASTERY BREWS UP COFFEE & CONVERSATION AT “BITCHES BREW” ARTS COMMUNITY NETWORKING EVENT
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Following in the footsteps of a tradition that’s as old as time, DC-based coffee brewery Southeastern Roastery is hosting Bitches Brew, a coffee dialogue, on
Saturday, April 23 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at
Songbyrd Music House
, 2477 18th St NW
. Co-hosted by the Collective Action for Safe Spaces, discussion will be centered around women-focused arts and activism as a proactive response to the proposed elimination of funding for the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). Tickets are $10 and can be purchased via Ticketfly at:
http://www.ticketfly.com/event/1465958
.
Bitches Brew is inspired by the ancient concept of a “sohbet,” which is an Arabic term meaning “conversation,” “discussion," or "chat." While traditional Turkish sohbets are exclusively male community conversations, “Bitches Brew” is open to anyone working on women-focused artistic expression and local organizations supporting women. Tastings of non-alcoholic Ethiopian Yirghacheffe, as well as unique and coffee-inspired cocktails, like Ethiopian Yirghacheffe with Dogfish Head "Bitches Brew" Stout, will be the conduit to get the conversation percolating.
“‘Do It Yourself’ is a time-tested ethos that has borne much art and activism, particularly here in DC; but sometimes, it takes a village to raise an arts scene—and a collaborative network can support more creativity than any lone actor ever could,” says Candy Schibli, Southeastern Roastery founder. “One of the goals of Bitches Brew is to connect 501c3 and non-501c3 groups so they can explore ways to collectively explore art funding opportunities, as well as gain access to new talent and different voices to tell their respective stories.”
Jayni Rassmussen, Collective Action for Safe Spaces interim policy director and event co-host says, "CASS strives for a community in which people of all backgrounds, gender expressions or identities, and experiences can feel safe occupying public spaces. Public art that creates a platform on which we can lift up the voices of people affected by these issues is essential to our efforts. By supporting and funding arts activism, we can enlighten, provoke thought, and drive social change."
Dior Ashley Brown, award-winning local musician and arts activist, will facilitate the discussion and Songbyrd will provide the soundtrack with songs like Miles Davis’ legendary jazz classic “Bitches Brew,” and selections from “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” and others to spark inspiration and discussion as part of their “Classic Albums Sunday” series.
