The DC Office of Planning is hosting a survey on their website to get the public's feedback on Streets for the People events including the Adams Morgan Pedestrian Zone. This feedback is very important to help inform future programs.

The Adams Morgan Pedestrian Zone will return on Sunday, October 23 with more fun activities and a few surprises.

The deadline is Friday for DC employers of tipped workers to certify their business has a sexual harassment policy.

We have received many questions about what the policy needs to include. These are the critical tenets employers are required to do:

Issue a sexual harassment policy that includes information about how to report instances of sexual harassment to the employer and to DC Office of Human Rights. (Details for how to report are

Post the policy in a location accessible to employees.

The deadline for scheduling harassment training for your staff is December 31. Both requirements are part of the Tipped Wage Workers Fairness Amendment Act of 2018, which also requires employers to report number of sexual harassment claims.
We know a number of operators have asked what are the requirements for training new employees and for re-training. The Office of Human Rights anticipates clarifying these points along with others shortly and we will have details about this and recommended trainers for you in a follow up email this week. Please stay tuned.

Ditch the Disposables grant applications
open in October. The program aims to reduce the use of disposable containers by providing grants to support a restaurant’s transition to reusables, including establishing dishwashing capacity and implementing the use of reusable containers.

In national updates, our national partners are advocating for the SBA to ease the burden for operators who have COVID-19 Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) payments now coming due, as many are not well positioned to avoid default. Credit card swipe fees are a top issue as well.

Wells Fargo Provides $500,000 to CNHED to help Small Businesses Raise Capital
|
The Coalition for Nonprofit Housing & Economic Development (CNHED) will receive $500,000 from The Wells Fargo Foundation to provide technical financial assistance to 100 small business owners interested in participating in the DC Rebuild Bond Program—a partnership between DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, the Deputy Mayor’s Office of Planning and Economic Development (DMPED), and SMBX, the financial marketplace that connects qualified small business owners with everyday investors.
The DC Rebuild Bond Program is driving $5 million in investment into the District’s small businesses by giving residents the opportunity to invest in them. All DC businesses are eligible, with a special emphasis on businesses in Wards 5, 7, and 8–neighborhoods that have historically experienced economic discrimination. The Wells Fargo grant seeks to increase the number and type of small businesses from those areas eligible to raise capital through the DC Rebuild Bond Program on the SMBX marketplace.
Many business owners are interested in the program, but need technical assistance to organize their finances and professionalize their bookkeeping before they can raise capital. Those small businesses will be identified by SMBX and referred to CNHED for that assistance, funded by the Wells Fargo grant.
Technical assistance costs offset by the grant include:

General accounting services, e.g. Quickbooks setup, etc.;
-
Help establishing accounting best practices;
-
Webinar education on business and financial planning;
-
Incorporation of legal services, e.g. from single-member entity to LLC, etc.;
-
Conversion from cash accounting, etc. to GAAP compliant accounting as required; and,
-
Independent financial review for capital raises above certain thresholds.

Alcohol License Renewal Deadline | Friday, September 30
Alcohol licenses for all B&Bs, nightclubs, and taverns expire at the end of September
. Licensees who do not renew timely will be subject to a late fee of $50 per business day, not to exceed the annual license fee, starting on Monday, October 3.
The Alcohol Beverage Control Board will issue Cease and Desist and Cancellation Orders on Wednesday, October 19 and Wednesday, November 2, respectively. MPD and wholesalers will be provided copies of the Orders. Licensees who have questions about attaining Certificates of Clean Hands from the District’s Office of Tax & Revenue are encouraged to listen to the
recorded information session
