1) SongByrd Record Cafe opens at 2475 18th Street, NW

NEIGHBORHOOD CAFÉ TO HIGHLIGHT DC’S MUSICAL HISTORY

U pon opening in D.C. on Friday, April 17th, Songbyrd Record Café will be the first of its kind in the city. Songbyrd is defined by the freedom to enjoy, consume, and interact with music in a comfortable, social environment. In addition, the Adams Morgan cafe houses one of the country’s only 1947 Vo ice-­‐O-­‐Graph recording booths, on which anyone and everyone is encouraged to record their own sounds directly onto a 45-­‐rpm record.

The moniker Songbyrd pays tribute to legendary DC musician, Charlie Byrd . One of the first to blend jazz and bossa nova in the early 60s, he is credited for introducing Americans to Brazilian music with the release his album: Jazz Samba , which was recorded in Washington,

D.C. Drenched in musical history, the new café occupies the same space as the former Showboat Lounge, where Byrd and Stan Getz dreamt up the idea for the career making album. To locals, the Showboat Lounge was the “finest” music room in Washington and Sonbyrd hopes to build on that legacy.

Sonbyrd aims to re-­‐imagine a musical destination in which devotees and aficionados can explore, create and purchase music while also enjoying a café atmosphere. With the Voice-­‐ O-­‐Graph, artists can record up to three minutes and ten seconds of music, comedy, thoughts, or anything at all and take home their very own “45’” for $15. Ultimately, Songbyrd will  offer approximately 350 vinyl records featuring an array of genres with a special emphasis on soul, funk, R&B, hip hop and indie albums that would make the cafe’s namesake proud.

Want to discover new music? The café will suggest featured releases and custom digital listening stations will be available to sample albums as well as curated playlists.

Industry vet Alisha Edmonson and fellow audiophile and Adams Morgan resident Joe Lapan are hoping to build a sense of community with the perfect blend of music and food. “Moments in life are defined by music; it is as much a part of the human experience as food,” said Edmonson. “We wanted to create a place that accentuates the listening experience, where music becomes integrated into the very fabric of the meeting with friends, not overpowering it, but not fading into the background either."

The coffee program plays an essential role in creating the harmonious atmosphere Songbyrd hopes to be known for. Fair trade, organic blend coffee brews from small batch producers in Africa and South America compliment the espresso program powered by a high performance Simonelli machine using a Full City blend, which provides an ample bodied flavor.


To create a mouthwatering menu for audiophiles, Songbyrd tapped Matthew Richardson, former chef of notoriously food-­‐savvy spots in the District area: 1905, The Argonaut and Gadsby’s Tavern. When it first opens, Songbyrd Record Café will serve an assortment of sandwiches including a chicken and brie schnitzel with raspberry sauce, an eight hour braised pork shoulder on sourdough with melted gruyere and red wine au jus, and the roast ‘byrd’ with sage roasted turkey breast, creole mayo, sprouts and cranberry relish on a baguette. The jumbo slice and mumbo slice, open-­‐faced sandwiches on focaccia, serve as Chef’s homage to the evolving neighborhood.

Those who have walked pass the record café will notice that Songbyrd is also working on a “music house” at the adjacent space at 2477 18th Street, N.W. News on plans for that space will follow.

Songbyrd Record Café will be open from 10am-­‐10pm Sunday through Thursday and from 10am-­‐12am on Friday and Saturday.

2) Record Store Day is Saturday April 18th

April 18th, 2015 is National Record Store Day!!! There are two stores in Adams Morgan participating: Crooked Beat and SMASH!

Hundreds of stores across the US will be celebrating the unique culture of the independent record store on this special day! Record stores are like restaurants: they may have a few of the same things on the menu, but they each have their own specialties and individual personalities. As one of the leading independent record stores in the US, Crooked Beat is very pleased to be participating in and celebrating Record Store Day again this year.

What are we doing?

To kick off our celebration of Record Store Day, we will hand out FREE Grab Bags filled with New promo & used CDs, stickers, buttons, vintage 7"s, magnets, posters, keychains, and other goodies to our first 100 paying customers. Some of the CDs and 7"s will be promos of current releases, others will be promos of releases through the years, ranging from currently unknown artists to obscure titles. Also to the first paying 75 customers we will be giving them a complimentary custom Crooked Beat tote bag!

Exclusive Releases for Record Store Day

There are around 450 releases this year, and we expect to carry around close to 325 of them! Most of the RSD titles we will carry are representative of what we sell here at Crooked Beat. Some of the highlighted limited releases this year include titles from 101ers (Joe Strummer's band before the Clash), The Animals, Ryan Adams, David Bowie, Neko Case, Courtney Barnette, D'Angelo, Miles Davis, Death Cab For Cutie, The Doors, Bob Dylan, Steve Earle, Brian Eno, Phish, Grateful Dead, Father John Misty, Flaming Lips, Marvin Gaye, Gram Parsons, Grandmaster Flash, Stiff Little Fingers, Grizzly Bear, Jimi Hendrix, J Dilla, Joan Jett, Kinks, Mark Kozelek, Johnny Marr, Mclusky, Mark Mothersbaugh, Of Montreal, Off, Metallica, Charlie Parker, Robert Plant, Frank Sinatra, Otis Redding, Brian WIlson, Sly Stone, Replacements, Swans, Sugarhill Gang, Stooges, Johnny Thunders, U2, Violent Femmes, Black Keys, Indiobravo, Insurgence Dc, The Everymen, John Prine, Built To Spill, Sun Ra, Clutch, Social Distortion plus hundreds of others. We will have the entire list of what we will be carrying sometime in the in the week leading up to Record Store Day. At this time we are still waiting for all the titles to arrive.

We will also be adding to the list in the coming days the Unofficial Record Store Day Titles.They are releases that are also made available on RSD. They may be import titles or releases going through different independent distribution channels versus the Official RSD releases. Please stay tuned for the announcement of these titles. We have found every year many of them are highly sought after titles that are extremely limited.

Since almost all of these releases are limited pressings, the labels have once again said they are going to allocate only so many titles per store. So, for example, though we ordered 25 of the Neko Case LP, we might only get 5 copies in. Or with the Brian WIlson release though we ordered 15 copies. We have already been notified that we have been allocated to 2 copies. This will very common with most of the RSD releases this year. Since there are even more indie stores participating this year,. We expect allocations will be even more brutal than previous years.

Like the previous Record Store Days in the years past, we will not be able to hold items for anyone. We will be letting 20 to 25 people in at a time. All titles will be behind the counter. We ask that people form a single-file line beginning at the counter, ending towards the back of the store. Due to how limited the titles are, customers are only allowed to get one copy of each title they purchase.

We are also asking this year for those coming early to try to limit the amount of backpacks and other belongings they may be carrying in the store. We have found this really backs up the line coming and going from the store- especially since we hold all backpacks and retail bags for everyone coming in the store.

Once we are open, please remember we will be only allowing 20 to 25 people in the store at a time.

Also we will be opening at 9 AM on RSD. But it will be 8 AM for (those who signed up last year and have qualified as being) Crooked Beat Frequent Customers. Qualifying Crooked Beat customers are those who come in and the store on average of 2-3 times a month during the year and present their customer card when making purchases.

We will be offering anyone to sign up as a Crooked Beat Frequent Customer starting again in May.

For our online customers: Any titles that remain in the store on Tuesday, April 21th will then be made available via our online store. Thanks.

3) Adams Morgan Summer Concert Series - begins May 2 - wristband discount program returns

We are really excited to be hosting another Summer Concert Series on

Saturdays in May and June. This will be our 7th year rocking out the plaza in

front of BB&T Bank!

As you may remember, the neighborhood is full of visitors the days of the

concerts so this translates to an opportunity for you to expand your list of

customers. We’d like to give them an extra incentive to walk in your door.

People who attend the concerts will be provided with distinctive red paper

bracelets and we would love to have your participation in offering them any

kind of discount or promotion that you think would be the best for them to get

Also on May 16th , there will be a large neighborhood-wide yard sale – the

“Mother of All Yard Sales” according to the organizers. They have agreed to

give the wrist bands to everyone who stops at one of the yard sales too. This

should double the number the people who get wristbands that day.

The discount or special you offer is only good on those Saturdays and

people have to present the paper wrist band.

5) Sweet Science Cafe coming to shared space at Skynear

Previously, Cafe Diem had a pop-up shop but looks like Sweet Science Coffee

Guitarist Richard Miller presents a concert featuring vocalists Kay Lyra and

NOFA for Healthy Food Retail Program grant

NOTICE OF FUNDING AVAILABILITY

DSLBD Healthy Food Retail Program Grant

The Department of Small and Local Business Development (DSLBD) is soliciting applications for the Healthy Food Retail Program Grant. DSLBD will award one grant in the amount of $170,000.

The purpose of the Healthy Food Retail Program Grant is to expand access to healthy foods in food deserts within the District of Columbia by providing assistance to corner stores, farmers markets and other small food retailers (less than 5,000 square feet).

Eligible applicants are nonprofit organizations or businesses.  For additional eligibility requirements and exclusions, please review the Request for Application (RFA) which is currently posted at www.dslbd.dc.gov .

Eligible Use of Funds : Applicants may propose any type of project which makes healthy produce more widely available in food deserts.  For additional examples of eligible uses of funds, exclusions, and a map of the DC food deserts, please review the RFA.

If awarded a grant, grantees must begin the project within thirty (30) days of executing the grant agreement and complete funded projects by September 30, 2015.

Application Process : Interested applicants must complete an application and submit it via email on or before Friday, May 15, 2015 at 2:00 p.m.  DSLBD will not accept applications submitted via hand delivery, mail or courier service. Late submissions and incomplete applications will not be forwarded to the review panel. Instructions and guidance regarding application preparation can be found in the RFA, which is available at http://dslbd.dc.gov/service/current-solicitations-opportunities .

Selection Process : DSLBD will select grant recipients through a competitive application process.  All applications will be forwarded to a review panel to be evaluated, scored, and ranked based on the selection criteria listed below.

1.      Capacity and Experience of the Applicant  (20 points)

2.      Strength of the Project Implementation Plan (20 points)

3.      Financial Viability of Applicant Organization (20 points)

4.      Percentage of Funds Benefiting DC Small Businesses and CBEs (20 points)

The DSLBD program team will review the panel reviewers’ recommendations and the DSLBD Director will make the final determination of grant awards. DSLBD will select a grantee by June 1, 2015.

Award of Grants : One grant for $170,000 will be awarded to a single grantee.

ABRA books and records training for restaurant licensees on April 30th

The Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration (ABRA) invites hotel and restaurant licensees to attend Books and Records Training on Thursday, April 30 .

Training will cover:
