On the federal relief front
, the National Restaurant Association has just completed a national survey of customers to assess the state of the industry amid the rise of the delta variant of the coronavirus. You are likely seeing these results first hand, which is that a majority of consumers have changed their dining behavior in a manner that is beginning to put acute pressure back on the restaurant industry. Now is the time to increase our pressure on Congress to replenish the Restaurant Revitalization Fund. RRF has been a lifeline for many owners, however 177,000 restaurants are still awaiting grants from the depleted fund. Click here to take action NOW. It will take you less than a minute, and will make a big difference. If you have a personal or professional address in Maryland or Virginia, we encourage you to use that address instead of a DC address. Click here for the results of the consumer behavior study.
Vaccines
: As you likely already saw, the FDA granted full approval this week for the Pfizer/BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine for people 16 years of age and older. This is the first of the coronavirus vaccines to receive full approval from the FDA. This is a huge step and could help us get closer to reaching herd immunity. It also provides more legal protections for establishments requiring vaccination for entry. In some states, these requirements were challenged in court by people questioning the legality of mandating a vaccine the FDA had not fully approved. This basis of the challenge can obviously no longer stand. It is also important to note that the Supreme Court has refused to entertain overturning such mandates.

Economic Equality for Women Entrepreneurs: A Conversation in Celebration of Women’s Equality Day 2021

To celebrate Women’s Equality Day, the U.S. Small Business Administration will host a virtual fireside chat on
Thursday, August 26 at 2 p.m. ET
with SBA Administrator Isabella Casillas Guzman and Assistant Administrator Natalie Madeira Cofield to discuss how SBA is empowering and supporting women entrepreneurs. The event will be streamed on Facebook and YouTube.
The number of women entrepreneurs is growing to unprecedented levels, and SBA has resources to help women small business owners survive and thrive during the COVID-19 pandemic. This includes Women’s Business Centers, which provide free counseling and training to women entrepreneurs across America. Last week, SBA issued 14 grant awards of up to $200,000 each to organizations in 13 states.

For the past year and a half, the community economic development field has faced unprecedented challenges with the emergence of COVID-19. Now as the District turns to recovery, it faces a new challenge.
Now is the time for nonprofits, community groups, small businesses, philanthropy, anchor institutions, the DC Government and others to come together to ensure the District not only recovers but that it's committed to an equitable recovery, focusing on the under-resourced families, communities, and businesses who were hardest-hit by the pandemic and face the biggest hurdles to finding stability once again.
This year, CNHED will leverage their annual Community Development Week as an opportunity for thought leadership, collaboration, and learning. Bringing together local leaders, government officials, organizations, and small businesses who have actively worked toward an inclusive and equitable recovery for the District, continuing to serve DC’s most vulnerable communities and residents.

Metro Update: More Trains, Buses & New Discounts Starting September 5
|
Metro is making changes that will make riding easier and more convenient as the region resumes school, leisure activities, and returns to workplaces. Starting September 5, 2021, Metro will add more buses and trains and offer discounts to make it easier for riders to return to work, school and wherever else they want to be. Here's an overview of the changes coming to Metro on September 5.
Discounts

Free bus transfers
– If you connect between rail and bus, the bus ride will now be free for all routes except Express service.
-
Lower rail fares on weekends
– Weekend fares on Metrorail will be $2 for a one-way trip.
Metrobus
-
More buses on the most popular Metrobus services
– On 36 lines, riders will see more buses, more often between 7 a.m.-9 p.m., 7 days a week.
-
New and restored service
– Customers on 10 routes will have new service added or service restored.
-
Less waiting between buses on additional routes
– Buses on more than 40 other routes will provide more frequent service for customers.
Metrorail
-
More trains, not just during rush hour
– Customers can expect to wait no more than 3-6 minutes for a train on weekdays at any station served by multiple lines and on the Red Line, all-day until 9:30 p.m.
-
Improved late-night train service
– More trains every hour after 9:30 p.m., every 5-8 minutes at any station served by multiple lines and every 10 minutes on the Red Line.
-
Later closing on Friday and Saturday
– Metrorail will stay open until 1 a.m. instead of midnight on Friday and Saturday.
-
Earlier opening on Sunday
– Metrorail will open at 7 a.m. instead of 8 a.m. on Sunday. That’s one hour earlier to get your day started.
-
More trains on weekends too
– Trains every 5-8 minutes at any station served by multiple lines and every 10 minutes on the Red Line.
