The Line Hotel DC
(the triangle park at Columbia, Euclid, and Champlain Streets). Venus will be reading stories about love, inclusion, and friendship… books that the entire family will enjoy!

8/28 - 9/3: Metropolitan Washington Summer Restaurant Week Kicks Off Next Week
|
Summer Restaurant Week
, presented by
Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington
(RAMW), returns as the biannual celebration of the region’s spirited restaurant industry from
Monday, August 28
, through
Sunday, September 3
. The area’s signature dining promotion invites everyone to close out summer with the return of one of the area’s most anticipated food-related celebrations, leading into exciting happenings like
DC Jazz Fest
and Labor Day Weekend.
Participating restaurants will offer multi-course brunch and lunch menus for $25 per person, and multi-course dinner menus for $40 or $55 per person for on-premises dining. Many restaurants will also offer cocktail, wine, and non-alcoholic pairings, including specialty options created with Topo Chico products at participating locations, giving diners wanting to partake in the program a variety of beverages to choose from.

Tipped Wage Bill Coming to MoCo
Montgomery County Councilmember Will Jawando plans to introduce a bill mid-September with fellow Councilmember Kristin Mink to phase out the tip credit there.

his proposal will be to increase the current hourly tipped wage of $4 to $8 in July 2024, then raise it an additional $2 a year until 2028.

Meanwhile:
The DC Council is also expected to take up legislation after Labor Day affecting implementation of Initiative 82, including speeding up the end of the District’s tip credit, waiving sales tax on service charges, and establishing a much-needed public education campaign.
OAG Service Fees Guidance Now Available in Spanish
Following this month’s earlier publication, the DC Attorney general posted the attached additional guidelines for disclosing service charges in Spanish.

The guidelines include four examples of compliant and noncompliant notices and descriptions of service fees.

"RAMW asked the Attorney General for more specific guidance about services fees, and his office heard us," said RAMW President and CEO Shawn Townsend. “We appreciate his consideration and responsiveness and look forward to helping make sure this information gets into the hands of our community of restaurateurs."
Anti-Harassment Trainings Deadline Aug. 31
Just over one week left to complete DC’s required anti-sexual harassment training.
Classes are $35 per person

We’ve heard from many operators concerns about the availability of trainers in meeting this month’s deadline and shared it with the DC Office of Human Rights. We’ll share any updates as they’re available.

The DC Mayor’s Office of Deaf, Deafblind, and Hard of Hearing is encouraging all businesses to turn on their TV’s closed captioning services to ensure accessibility for all guests.

Donations Still Being Accepted for Maui
This month’s wildfires in Hawai'i left heartbreaking losses. Homes and schools as well as restaurants, hotels, and small businesses have a monumental journey ahead to rebuild. The Hawai'i Restaurant Association is mobilizing donations to provide urgent relief for Maui.

There is a wealth of information on lenders and loan products available to support small businesses, and this guide aims to consolidate that information and provide key tips on how small businesses owners can research, compare, and apply for these financial resources. While this guide is useful for any small business, it is specifically designed for first-time borrowers embarking on their search for debt financing.

Clear Lanes Automated Traffic Enforcement Program
|
The Clear Lanes Project is a joint initiative between WMATA and the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) that aims to improve bus travel times and enhance bus stop safety by using camera technology to identify illegally parked and stopped vehicles in dedicated bus lanes and bus stops.
Bus lanes and stops are often blocked by stopped or parked vehicles. When vehicles block bus lanes, this slows down everyone because buses must merge into traffic to navigate around the vehicles blocking the bus lane.
WMATA has mounted automated cameras on buses serving select routes in DC. A map of camera-equipped bus routes, as well as the bus lanes in the District, is
provided here
. These cameras automatically take photo and video of violating vehicles and send the information directly to DDOT for enforcement.
A 45-day warning period began in late July 2023, with full enforcement beginning on September 18th, 2023. Once ticketing begins, fines are up to $200.

💸 Commercial Property Acquisition Fund (DMPED)
The Commercial Property Acquisition Fund will provide eligible businesses with down payment assistance of up to $750,000 or 25% of the sale price, whichever is less, for the acquisition of commercial property in the District. This year, businesses will need to complete three mandatory sessions in order to apply for the Fund. OPEN now on a rolling basis until funds are expended.
