Save the Date: Adams Morgan Apple Festival: October 18
|
The Annual
Adams Morgan Apple Pie Baking Contest
and the Annual Licking Creek Bend Farm Heirloom Apple Tasting returns on Saturday, October 18! The highly-anticipated community event will take place in front of The Line Hotel and directly across the street from the farmer’s market in Unity Park at Euclid and Champlain Streets NW.
The entry form for pie baking contestants will go live
on our website here
at noon on Wednesday, September 17
. There are only 16 available entry slots and those are typically all claimed
within minutes
of the form going live.

Adams Morgan PorchFest: November 1
|
The 15th edition of
Adams Morgan PorchFest
is coming up on Saturday, November 1 and we're in the midst of planning for another great event.
There are several ways you can get involved (other than just showing up and enjoying the day):

Perform:
If you are a musician and would like to perform, please fill out the
band registration form
. Be aware that we always have more bands sign up than we have spots available to play, so signing up doesn't guarantee a space. Also we need to see you play, so be prepared to share video of your band performing. We are open to all musical genres but we're looking for live performances.

Volunteer:
We have a very small staff and this is a very large event that we can't put on without volunteers. Volunteers will get a PorchFest t-shirt, access to the green room with food & drinks during the event, and more! To sign up to volunteer,

Host performances at your place:
This event grows every year but we work to grow it responsibly. We want to maintain an event footprint that is small enough that someone can walk from one end to the other while continuing to grow, and to do that we're hoping to find new locations in the neighborhood that are far enough away from existing spots to avoid sound bleed. Pepco is in the early stages of a multi-year project to upgrade the Champlain Street Substation that was built in 1930. The project is expected to be completed by December 2028. For more information there is a flyer available for download

EV Charging Opportunity for Building Owners
|
it's electric
is an urban EV charging company that has partnered with the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) on a pilot program to expand access to curbside EV charging (more info
here
). They are actively looking for building owners in our area who would be interested in hosting a pair of curbside EV chargers. They are particularly interested in partnering with multifamily buildings or buildings that are close by to multifamily developments. At a glance:
They install small curbside EV chargers in neighborhoods where drivers park on the street.
They do this at no cost to the building owner. And as they power the chargers from nearby buildings, they then share revenue directly back with those building owners.

A month into federal operations in the District, restaurant operators continue navigating workforce disruptions and declining sales as presidential control of local police expires.

Presidential Emergency Ends:
President Donald Trump's temporary control of District police expires today. While MPD is no longer “compelled to provide MPD services as directed by the president,” said Mayor Muriel Bowser, federal agents and National Guard troops are expected to
maintain their presence on city streets
.

Coordination Continues:
Mayor Bowser issued an executive order last week establishing ongoing collaboration with FBI, DEA, ATF, National Park Police, and Capitol Police, while notably excluding Department of Homeland Security agencies — including ICE — from future coordination plans.

Congressional Action:
The House Oversight Committee today marks up 14 bills expanding federal oversight in the District, including replacing the elected attorney general with a presidential appointee. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton vowed to oppose each measure: “
I will not make it easy for them
. These bills are yet further evidence of why we need DC statehood”

Restaurant operators cite significant workforce disruptions and declining business as federal activities affect daily operations, and multiple operators report staff detained despite having legal work authorization.
