40 years of sustainably grown produce from the Licking Creek Bend Farm

The Adams Morgan Farmers Market is celebrating 40 consecutive years of sustainably grown produce with a special event on Saturday, September 28.  From 10:00am - 1:00pm, on the corner of 18th and Columbia Rd NW, join the owners of the Licking Creek Bend Farm for music, food, and entertainment.

An HEIRLOOM APPLE TASTING will offer a rare opportunity to taste varieties like Wolf River, Orange Pippen, and Sheep Nose from 10 to 11 am. Ward 1 Councilmember Jim Graham and others will deliver remarks beginning at 11 am.

Michael Tabor owns and has represented The Licking Creek Bend Farm on the corner of 18th St. and Columbia Rd NW since 1972. “My philosophy has been, and still is, to bring healthy, affordable produce to all the neighborhoods in DC regardless of income level,” said Tabor.

Visiting the market on Saturday mornings has become a tradition for Washingtonians. “Our loyal customers have created a ‘village square’ atmosphere where neighbors come to shop for their week’s fruits and vegetables, chat about recipes, and see old friends,” said Tabor.

“With farmers markets as popular as they are now, it’s hard to imagine a time when they weren’t part of the community – but Adams Morgan was really at the forefront here in DC,” said Kristen Barden, Executive Director of the Adams Morgan Partnership Business Improvement District (BID).

September 26, 2013—It may never be easier to get up close and personal with the musical talent of Washington than at the first annual Adams Morgan PorchFest when the front stoops and porches of the community will be transformed into intimate performance spaces to be enjoyed by anyone who happens to stroll by. And it’s free!

Inspired by similar Porchfest events across the country aimed at creating a family friendly, neighborhood-based alternative to the nightclub music scene, Adams Morgan’s version will span an eclectic range of styles from Brazilian, Irish and jazz, to indie rock, children’s music and even Egyptian Nubian folkloric(!)

“Adams Morgan has a rich musical heritage, and many of our residents are working musicians —PorchFest is a family friendly way to share their talent with the community,” said Kristen Barden of the Adams Morgan Partnership BID.

“PorchFest is exactly the kind of grassroots arts event that brings people and neighborhoods together— and the tree lined side streets and architecture of Adams Morgan will only complement the performances. We are delighted to partner with the Adams Morgan Partnership BID to bring art out and into the streets,” said Steve Shulman, executive director of Cultural Tourism DC.

“We made our porch available even though we didn’t know what kind of music would be played, or who would be playing, but because it sounded like fun.  Free music for the people – who wouldn’t support that?” said Adam Crain, owner of Adam’s Inn.

Sponsored by the Adams Morgan Partnership Business Improvement District (AMPBID), Adams Morgan PorchFest is a joint project with Cultural Tourism DC and will bookend Art4All DC - One City, Four Quadrants, Activated with Arts: A Festival of Festivals that began September 13 and runs through October 6.

September 23, 2013 NEW RATES went into effective at the Colonial Parking garage off of 18th Street (entrance from east side of 2400 block of 18th Street just north of Belmont Road):

1-hour $10.00

2 -hour $15.00

Max $19.00.

Friday & Saturday after 5pm:

1-hour $12.00

Max $20.00

DAYTIME PARKING VALIDATION PROGRAM - NO CHANGES:

All Adams Morgan businesses offer FREE daytime parking validation (no purchase necessary) in the Colonial parking garage for up to four hours for only $7.00.

Park at the garage, take the ticket from the garage, a business owner will give you a card with 4 hours validated then return to the garage and pay $7.00. This deal is available seven days a week until 5 PM when regular rates apply. The validation is only good for up to 4 hours, any fraction thereafter, whether before 5pm or not, will incur the maximum fee.

If you only want to park for up to 2 hours – there is a validation for that also. For up to 2 hours businesses will validated your parking and you only pay $3.00.

Street parking is limited and is $2/hour to park at a metered place. Paid parking is required at meters until 10 pm. Easier and cheaper to park in the garage.

Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk - comes through Adams Morgan on the sidewalk - October 11th

The Susan G Komen 3-Day Walk for a Cure will be returning on Friday, October 11, 2013 to Washington, DC. The walkers will come through Adams Morgan on 18th Street between 11am- 3pm. The walkers will be coming across the Calvert Street bridge from Connecticut Avenue to 18th Street and turning east on U Street. We are expecting approximately 900 participants this year. All walkers will be using the sidewalks.
