Don't Forget - Small Business Saturday - November 24th

Last year Adams Morgan Main Street helped get some great publicity for Adams Morgan small businesses in conjunction with American Express' Small Business Saturday campaign. You might remember seeing the following ad that played on national tv for months, along with other similar ads:

http://www.youtube.com/user/AmericanExpress?v=C7hyTl3S6Y4

This year please don't forget to take advantage of this campaign!

It is easy to participate!

Are you a qualified merchant to participate?

To make sure go to:

https://www.americanexpress.com/us/small-business/Shop-Small/

Or call : 800-235-8916

Please make sure to encourage your staff to push items over $25 on Small Business Saturday so as to have qualifying purchases for your customers!

Or push large orders and gift cards that week if your price point is lower.

Here is an example of what one business is doing:

MINT Fitness is running a promotion where clients (members and non-members) can purchase a gift card for $100 that has a value of $115.

After your customers register (if they have a smart phone), when they walk by participating businesses, their phones will let them know that they are next to a participating business - the MAP program. And Facebook advertisements will come up based on the geo-codes they use.

Encourage your AMEX customers to go to www.shopsmall.com beginning on November 18th to register to participate! Only customers who have pre-registered will get the $25 credit.

Census Bureau's 2012 Economic Census and Business.usa.gov

Economic Census Information You Can Use at business.census.gov

This fall, businesses in Adams Morgan and across the country, more than 4 million businesses in all,  will receive the 2012 Economic Census forms from the U.S. Census Bureau. Selected companies will receive forms in November, but most will get them in December.

Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke has called this census "indispensable to understanding America's economy." Taken every five years, the Economic Census "assures the accuracy of the statistics we rely on for sound economic policy and for successful business planning," said Bernanke.

There are a lot of interesting facts from the last Economic Census, available about Adams Morgan at business.census.gov . Examples there illustrate how Census Bureau economic statistics are used by local businesses for marketing and planning, as well as by government agencies and researchers.

Your response makes a difference! Please complete the forms when you receive them. Questions? go to: econ@census.gov or 301-763-2547 or 877-790-1876.

Mayor Grey launches 5 Year Economic Development Strategy

On November 14, the Mayor introduced the city's new Five Year Economic Development Strategy . This ambitious plan sets out six broad visions, including making DC the "most business-friendly economy in the nation" and creating a major technology center at St. Elizabeth's and a medical center at the McMillan site.

It contains 52 specific initiatives, each tied to one of the visions. District businesses and universities will play a central role in working with city government to implement these initiatives.

Through this strategy, the Mayor hopes to create 100,000 new jobs and an additional $1 billion in tax revenue over the next five years.

The Five-Year Economic Development Strategy includes six transformative visions for the DC economy which are:

• Create the most business-friendly economy in the nation;
• Grow the largest technology center on the East Coast;
• Be the nation’s destination of choice;
• End retail leakage;
• Develop a best-in-class global medical center; and
• Become the top North American destination for foreign investors, businesses and tourists.

The strategy – available online here on the website of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development.  Please take the time to read the plan and share it with your neighbors.

Interested in advertising in the Shop Local Gift Guide of the Washington City Paper? The BID will chip in too.

The Washington City Paper is running a cover story on December 7th all about shopping locally for the holidays.

The issue will include a Shop Local Gift Guide as well featuring:
• Suggested gifts for various recipients: boyfriend/husband, girlfriend/wife, boyfriend, etc...
• Gifts will highlight local retailers and range from under $25 to over $200.
• Guide layout produced by “Belle” of Capitol Hill Style, whose work has been featured in Elle, Washingtonian, Time magazine and others.
• Gift guide will be the cover story for the week.
• Retail and gifts exclusively sold in D.C. highlighted for readers who want to support local businesses.

If Adams Morgan businesses are interested in participating in a full-page ad in this edition for $1800, the AMPBID will contribute $600. So the total cost divided among all businesses participating would be $1200. If there are 4 businesses participating, the cost to each would be $300.

The deadline for the December 7th issue is Friday November 30th for space and 12/3 for art. Please contact Kristen at: kbarden@adamsmorganonline.org if you are interested.
