F undraiser for Miriam's Kitchen at Tail Up Goat
From our friends at Tail Up Goat:
(1827 Adams Mill Road NW | 202.986.9600)
Every day, while we're dishing up lamb ribs and shrubs in Adams Morgan, the chefs at Miriam's Kitchen are hovering over their own ovens in Foggy Bottom, thoughtfully crafting meals from scratch to serve those in need. The venues may be different, but the commitment to hospitality is the same - from using locally-sourced, seasonal ingredients to making every guest feel at home.
Join us on Sunday, August 21st as we come together under one roof to do what we do best in support of Miriam's work to end chronic homelessness in DC. We'll be offering a set menu at $125 per person (exclusive of tax, gratuity, and beverage), featuring tomatoes as the unifying theme with incredible summer produce generously donated by the Tuscarora Organic Growers Cooperative. We'll be joined by industry friends with Peter Pastan (Obelisk & 2 Amys), Cizuka Seki (Izakaya Seki), Sam Adkins (Sally's Middle Name), and Alex Levin (Osteria Morini) all contributing dishes alongside our own Jon Sybert and Ciji Wagner (of Tail Up Goat and Miriam's).
Everyone from servers to cooks will be donating their time, so every cent earned will go to Miriam's programming. Vegetarian alternatives will be available for all of the dishes, and we'll be offering both alcoholic and non-alcoholic pairings to accompany the meal. Reservations go live via our website on August 1st at 11:00am.
To quote MFK Fisher: "We must eat. If, in the face of that dread fact, we can find other nourishment and tolerance and compassion for it, we’ll be no less full of human dignity. There is a communion of more than our bodies when bread is broken and wine drunk." Come celebrate that communion with us in service of a noble cause for what promises to be a very memorable night.
Hope to see you there,
Bill, Jon, & Jill

W ard 1 Heritage Guide released
The DC Historic Preservation Office announces the release of the fifth ward-specific heritage document, Ward 1 Heritage Guide: A Discussion of Ward 1 Cultural and Heritage Resources.
Defined by its rich and readily apparent architectural and cultural history, Ward 1 is a cultural melting pot, embracing immigrants from all parts of the world.  As the modern heart of the city’s Latino and Ethiopian communities, Ward 1 is also the home of many of Washington’s African-American and Asian-American businesses, landmarks and cultural resources.
A high concentration of historic resources, including all or parts of 12 designated historic districts and nearly 80 individually listed landmarks are found in Ward 1.  Most of these are residential neighborhoods while a few encompass cultural and institutional landscapes such as Rock Creek Park, the National Zoo, and the McMillan Park Reservoir.  Archeological sites at Kalorama Park, Piney Branch Quarry, and Meridian Hill also relate historic and prehistoric information on lifeways and trends within what would become one of the city’s most vibrant wards.
The colorful 56-page guide is accessible and may be downloaded from this link .
