AMPBID Full Membership Meeting, May 14
|
Adams Morgan Partnership Business Improvement District (AMPBID) will hold a Special All Member Meeting on Tuesday, May 14, 2019 at 5pm in the Festival Center conference room at 1640 Columbia Road, NW.
At the March 12 regularly scheduled monthly AMPBID Board of Directors meeting the board voted to approve changes to the AMPBID bylaws (
those are available by clicking here
). And
on April 9 the Board approved a reduction to the AMPBID tax rate
. There was a quorum present at both meetings.
The proposed reduced tax rate will be $.19 per $100 of the total assessed value for all non-exempt commercial properties in the BID boundaries.
Currently, the rate is $.21. The changes to the bylaws and the proposed lower AMPBID tax rate must be affirmed by the AMPBID membership at a meeting called for that purpose.
To meet those obligations, we will hold a Special All Member Meeting on Tuesday, May 14 2019 at 5 PM to ratify the bylaws and the reduced tax rate. Business and property owners should have received a proxy ballot in the mail to exercise your vote if you are unable to attend the meeting. AMPBID Special Meeting Voting Process
Quorum:
In order for the voting to proceed, there must be a quorum established. A quorum requires the presence in person or by proxy, of the Members holding 25% or more of the outstanding votes in the Corporation, with the majority being property owners and representing 10% of all commercial properties (at least 21 properties) and 10% of all commercial tenants (at least 25 commercial tenants).
Voting:
At the beginning of the meeting, each BID member will be offered a ballot (or ballots) based on what “class” of member they are (either a business owner or a property owner or both). Someone who is both a property owner and a business owner will be offered two ballots. Each ballot will specify the amount of votes each member is allocated. For business owner members, this is based on the number of leases that they hold (i.e. a member with one business will get one vote, a member with two businesses two votes, etc.). For property owners, this is based on the amount of BID tax that property is assessed (regardless of who actually pays the tax). For each $500 of taxes due, a property owner receives one vote. For example, a property with an annual BID tax of $1350 would generate 2.5 votes.
Per the by-laws, any properties for which BID taxes are over 60 days delinquent, may not vote at this special meeting.
For each class of member, members will vote in support of or against the changes to the bylaws AND the proposed BID tax rate reduction.
Proxies:
Proxy votes are allowed. Pursuant to the BID bylaws, those interested in voting in the special meeting by proxy can either request a form from AMPBID or can develop their own form, as long as it includes the date of the meeting at which it is applicable (May 14, 2019).

Three Weeks to Bike To Work Day -- Register Now
|
Spring is in the air, and with it, registration for Bike to Work Day (BTWD) 2019, organized by
Commuter Connections
and the
Washington Area Bicyclist Association
(WABA), is now open. Thousands are expected to register and participate in this year’s event on
Friday, May 17
, which will feature 115 pit stops across the region with refreshments, giveaways—and the chance to win one of many new bicycles as part of a free raffle. Additionally, the first 20,000 registrants to attend will receive a free T-shirt. Register for free at:

Adams Morgan Movie Nights Celebrates Moon Landing
|
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, Adams Morgan Movie Nights will feature five space-themed films, including a panel discussion and stargazing, in collaboration with the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum.
On five Tuesday evenings from May 21 to June 18, grab a blanket, a friend, and eats from a neighborhood restaurant to watch films under the twinkling lights of the city. On select evenings, experts and staff from the
National Air and Space Museum
will discuss the science behind the films and set up telescopes for on-site viewing (conditions permitting). Several restaurants on the surrounding blocks will be offering special “Brown Bag Movie Meals” packaged to go that attendees can bring to the field; check the

New Street Banners Highlight Local Flavor & Artists
|
Adams Morgan looks even more colorful, as new banners designed by a local artist have gone up throughout the neighborhood. The Adams Morgan Partnership partnered with local creative agency
Maga Design
to create a new visual identity for the neighborhood in 2018. Then, building upon this new “look,” the Partnership commissioned artist
Rebecca Williams
for original art to update the neighborhood’s light pole banners. Rebecca is a full-time artist who works from her studio overlooking Columbia Road NW.
The street pole banners are part of a broader placemaking and community building effort. Over the last few days, more than 200 banners have been installed on 18th Street, Columbia Road, Florida Avenue, Calvert Street, and the Duke Ellington Bridge, welcoming neighbors and visitors to the community and marking this area as Adams Morgan.
The subjects of the banner artwork were adapted from local photography, as well as iconic figures that have impacted the culture of the community. For example, the “Music Is Our Language” banner features Ian MacKaye, lead singer of the 1980’s punk rock band, Fugazi and its predecessor, Minor Threat, which played its first concert in a house on Calvert Street. WRAP’s 2019 Cinco de Mayo SoberRide campaign is scheduled to run from 4:00 p.m. Sunday, May 5th (Cinco de Mayo) until 4:00 a.m. Monday, May 6th, 2019.
AMPBID will be distributing SoberRide cards and posters to ABRA businesses next week.
WRAP’s SoberRide program is one of the nation’s most successful free safe rides programs for would-be impaired drivers.

DSLBD Accepting Applications for
Robust Retail: Citywide Grants
of up to $10,000 per Business
|
A robust retail sector is critical to maintaining the vibrancy of DC neighborhoods, but market realities are changing for retail businesses. Thus the Robust Retail grant(s) support existing DC-based retail businesses adapting their business model to meet changing customer demand. DSLBD encourages but does not require applicants to include Made in DC products as part of their concept for business model redesign.
DSLBD intends to award up to $10,000 per business for a total of 40 businesses from the $400,000 in available funding for spring/summer 2019. Funds must be fully expended with appropriate receipts and accounting by September 30, 2019.
